Early life
Jelly Roll was born on the 4th of December, 1986 in Antioch, Tennessee. His father’s name is Buddy DeFord who died on March 21, 2019. During the 60s and 70s, his dad was the only guy who sold meat to the black part of town. Jelly shared that his father taught him to treat people equally and to stand against racism. He has two brothers, Roger and Scott, and a sister, Shelby.
Jelly’s academic achievements are yet to get revealed. However, it is known that he stepped into the music industry after completing high school.

He earned early fame after collaborating with Memphis rapper, Lil Wyte on the 2010 song “Pop Another Pill”. The official music video of the song has gathered more than 6.3 million views on YouTube. Following the success of the song, the hip-hop group, SNO released the album, Year Round in April 2011.
Jelly was a part of the hip group, SNO and along with the group, he released the single “Come Here, White Girls”. After some time, the song was named one of the 10 Most Memorable White Rapper Collaborations by hip-hop magazine, XXL. Following then, he dropped many mixtapes including the Therapeutic Music series and the Gamblin’ on a Whiteboy series. In October 2012, he released his independent debut solo album “The Big Sal Story”.
Afterward, he dropped two collaborative albums with rapper, Haystak and two collaborative albums with fellow rapper, Lil Wyte. In addition, he worked on four collaborative albums with Nashville rapper, Struggle Jennings. He further collaborated with Lil Wyte and BZP under the group SNO and worked on one album.
Jelly released the mixtape, Whiskey, Weed, & Women in 2013. The mixtape was initially named, Whiskey, Weed, & Waffle House, which was changed after the restaurant threatened to take legal action for using their name and logo on the cover. Then, the replacement cover for the mixtape featured a cease and desist stamp in place of the Waffle House logo.
Roll released his latest studio album, Ballads of the Broken on September 17, 2021. He performed the song, Son of a Sinner from the album on Jimmy Kimmel’s Live show in early July 2022. Jelly dropped the official music video of his song, Even Angels Cry in March 2022. The music video has received over 1.8 million views. On May 13, 2022, he made a huge announcement of the biggest concert of his life in his hometown, which would take place on December 9.
