Early Life
Joel Embiid was born in Cameroon and spent the early part of his life in the West African nation. Despite eventually becoming a pro basketball player, Embiid played mostly soccer and volleyball growing up. His initial aspirations were to become a professional volleyball player. It wasn’t until he was 15 that Embiid started playing basketball.
Eventually growing to be seven feet tall, Embiid was a natural at basketball. At age 16, he moved to the U.S. to pursue basketball. He was a five-star recruit in high school and played one season of college basketball at Kansas, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors while averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game.
Joel Embiid Net Worth and Career
Injuries started to have a negative impact on Joel Embiid’s career while he was still in college. He missed the end of his only college season because of a stress fracture in his back. A few months later, he required surgery to address a broken bone in his foot. Despite the surgery sidelining him for four to six months, the 76ers drafted Embiid third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft.
The foot surgery forced Embiid to miss his entire rookie season. The healing process continued to be slow, eventually requiring a second surgery on his right foot that forced Embiid to miss the 2015-16 NBA season as well. After missing two full seasons, Embiid finally made his NBA debut in October 2016, more than two and a half years after his final college game. Unfortunately, a torn meniscus sidelined Embiid that year, limiting him to just 31 games during the 2016-17 season.
After three frustrating and injury-plagued seasons, Embiid started to make up for lost time. During the 2017-18 season, he averaged 22.9 points, 11 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game in 63 games for the 76ers. He was named an all-star for the first time in 2018 and has been named to the All-Star Team in every subsequent year.
In addition to establishing himself as a perennial all-star and one of the best defensive players in the NBA, Embiid continued to develop as a scorer. He raised his scoring average to 27.5 points per game during the 2018-19 season and 28.5 points per game during the 2020-21 season. During the 2021-22 season, Embiid led the NBA in scoring at 30.6 points per game. He led the league in scoring again in 2022-23, averaging a career-high 33.1 points per game, which was enough to earn him MVP honors. The only thing left for Embiid to accomplish is to win a championship, as the 76ers have yet to progress beyond the Conference Semifinals during his career.
Personal Life
Joel Embiid is married to Anne de Paula, a model from Brazil. The two started dating in 2018 and got married in July 2023. The two were introduced to one another by mutual friends and initially bonded over their love of soccer. Embiid’s Instagram account has roughly 7.5 million followers, although he rarely posts pictures of his wife or family.
Joel Embiid Net Worth
As of 2023, Embiid has an estimated net worth of $85 million. His career earnings to this point are around $147 million. However, Embiid still has time remaining on the four-year, $196 million extension he signed with the 76ers in August 2021. While his financial future looks promising, it’s essential for athletes to make wise investments. Exploring opportunities like partnering with well-established brands such as DraftKings sportsbook could be a strategic move to secure his financial stability.
