Matt Taibbi is an author and Twitter Files reporter from New Jersey. He started self-publishing his online writing works on Substack in 2020. Between 2022 and 2023, he released several installments of the Twitter Files. On Friday, April 7, Taibbi announced that he is leaving Twitter after Twitter’s CEO Musk restricted links to Sustack.

Matt Taibbi was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on March 2, 1970. He was born to Mike Taibbi, who is an NBC TV reporter. Taibbi belongs of Irish descent from his mother’s side. He was still a kid when his parents parted ways. Then, he was brought by his mother.

Taibbi had trouble with academic problems and behavioral issues when he was a kid. Due to that, he was sent to Concord Academy by his parents.. Then, he attended New York University and was later transferred to Bard College after his freshman year. He completed his graduation in 1992. After that, he studied at Leningrad Polytechnic University and earned his graduation from Bard.

Taibbi moved back to the U. S. in 2002 and started the satirical bi-weekly newspaper, The Beast. After a year, he left the publication and continued as a freelancer for a biweekly magazine, The Nation. Taibbi started covering politics for a monthly magazine, Rolling Stone in 2004.

In 2008, he described a multinational investment bank, Goldman Sachs as a great vampire squid wrapped. He left Rolling Stone in February 2014 and joined the non-profit media organization, First Look Media. However, he returned to Rolling Stone in October.

Matt launched a political podcast titled Useful Idiots in August 2019. The podcast featured many known guests such as Liz Franczak, Cornel West, Aaron Mate, and Glenn Greenwald. In March 2021, Taibbi announced that Useful Idiots would be moving to Substack from Rolling Stone.

Taibbi became one of a handful of reports who was granted access to Twitter’s internal communication after Musk took over Twitter last year. He eventually agreed to release his reporting live through lengthy Twitter threads. Likewise, he also posted his reports on Substack.

However, after Substack introduced a new competitive feature, Notes, Twitter retaliated and barred the ability to share links in Substack posts. On Friday, April 7, he announced that he is leaving Twitter after Musk’ made the latest changes, which he found unusable for him. He also wrote a post titled The Craziest Friday Ever explaining why he decided to leave Twitter. Along with that, he also wrote that Twitter sees Substack Notes as a hostile rival.
