Early life

Sonny Barger was born on the 18th of October, 1938 in Modesto, California. He was 4 when his mom abandoned the family. Sonny and his sister, Shirley was raised by their alcoholic father and grandmother. He grew up in Oakland. Sonny was suspended many times from his school for assaulting teachers. He also used to get into fights with other boys.

Sonny was studying in 10th grade when he dropped out of school. Though he left school, he didn’t become a drug addict like his other school friends. Instead, he worked at a grocery store. In 1955, at 16 years of age, he was enlisted in the U. S. Army. However, after 14 months, he was given an honorable discharge as he forged his birth certificate to join the Army. Then, he did some low-skilled jobs staying with his dad at a hotel. After a while, he moved with his sister.

Barger was involved in his first motorcycle club called the Oakland Panthers in 1956. After the disbandment of the club, he joined another group of bikers. One of the bikers was Don “Boots” Reeves, who belonged to a North Sacramento-based defunct motorcycle club. Then in April 1957, he along with Reeves founded the club, Hells Angels. Each member of the club wore the patch, which was later referred to as the Hells Angels’ Death’s Head logo.

Sonny was the president of the Oakland Hells Angels. He traveled to Southern California to divide territory and form club bylaws. While amalgamating with other Hells Angels Chapters, conflicts arose with other clubs. Sonny became the proclaimed national president in 1958 since the San Bernardino Hells Angels chapter, the founder was in jail. After becoming national president, he moved the club’s mother chapter headquarters from San Bernardino to Oakland.

Barger got a fracture on his skull while indulging in a fight with Oakland police. Thereafter, due to extended absences, he was dismissed from the club. Then, he worked as a machine operator until 1965. Sonny was arrested for possessing marijuana in 1963. After a year, he was arrested again for assault with a deadly weapon. He started selling heroin in the late 1960s.

Barger and the Hells Angels started turning over weapons, which were acquired on the black market from the year 1967. The weapons were also used in an exchange for the release of jailed Hells Angels members to the Oakland Police Department (OPD). In 1972, the OPD sergeant, Edward “Ted” Hilliard testified that he exchanged guns, grenades, and dynamites with Barger. On August 30, 1968, Barger along with 33 other members was arrested on drug charges.

Sonny was arrested again on April 11, 1970, on narcotics charges. The drug charges against him were later dismissed. However, he was sentenced to 90 days in jail. On October 28, 1988, he was sentenced to a 4-year prison term on a conviction of conspiracy. In November 1994, he held a private party to celebrate the end of his parole.

In October 2016, he left Arizona and returned to the Oakland chapter. He became a best-selling author after releasing his autobiography “Hell’s Angel: The Life and Times of Sonny Barger” in 2000. After that, he wrote several other biker-related novels.

Personal Life

Sonny Barger has been married four times. He lost his first wife, Elsie Mae due to embolism in the bloodstream after an illegal abortion in 1967. Then, he started a relationship with Sharon Gruhike in 1969. He reportedly married Gruhike in 1973.  Barger then married his third wife, Noel, with whom he returned to Arizona in 1998. He had a domestic dispute with Noel and his stepdaughter, Sarrah, and was arrested in March 2003. He was later sentenced to an 8-day jail term for aggravated assault.

Sonny got wed to his fourth wife, Zorana in June 2005. He suffered from throat cancer in 1983. Sonny was also suffering from prostate cancer for which he went through surgery in 2012. After the surgery, he was declared free of cancer. Barger had a long battle with liver cancer and passed away peacefully in his home on June 29 in Livermore, California.
