There has never been an incident in history where art and religion were on opposite sides, because these are the most important factors in the development of culture. They both have the same spiritual and emotional influence on a person, and most importantly, to feel the essence of existence through painting, icons, music, sculptures – all this helps them enter the spiritual world.

Religion, like art, has a regulating lever of the social structure of society, where everything depends on the state depending on the nature of the faith of the person to which it belongs. Art is a tool in the hands of man, just like religion – artists use oil paintings to embody their inner world. Moving on to the analysis, the main goal of religious art is to convey to people that God exists and he created man for a specific purpose and it is beyond this mortal world.

Artists’ attitude to religion

Throughout the history of art, there have been various controversial cases from artists, some supporting the idea of religion in oil paintings, and others opposing it. Artists in the modern world often turn to the theme of human spiritual education and attitude towards religion in their oil paintings, creating masterpieces of painting. For example, the modern artist Litvinov, having secured his status as one of the best masters who depicts both mythology and religion. Using both traditional methods of painting oil paintings and abstraction, Litvinov touched on the topic: “what is life like in the spiritual world” – and at the same time revealing the vices of people, presenting it like Dante.

The influence of religion through art on a person contributes to the development of not only spiritual enlightenment, but also the creative potential of a person – being a powerful source of inspiration. Thus, religious art evokes a deep emotional reaction and provokes reflection on complex topics, for example, the role of man in this life – artists convey this directly through their oil paintings.Thus, artists developed the opinion that everyone finds self-knowledge through different topics, some through religion, some through nature, and some contribute to development through a loved one, but each topic leads to one thing – spiritual education.

What is religion art?

We figured out what the close connection is between art and religion, what the attitude of artists is to this topic, and we need to understand what religion is in art. The genre differs from others in art by the influence of plots and characters from the Holy Scriptures of Christians, sacred texts of Jews, Buddhists and other religions. Religious art has a clear moral and emotional message and is characterized by a close connection with ritual, belief in a higher power and symbolism.

In the iconography of the Eastern Orthodox Church, for example, images of saints and biblical subjects were central to spiritual practice and worship. Icons, created with special attention to detail and symbolism, served not only as objects of worship, but also as a means of conveying religious doctrine and the inner world of a person.

As mentioned earlier, religious art conveys given thoughts through symbols, and as is right, artists in their oil paintings do not lag behind in this regard, and even succeed. So, for example, a list of the main contenders for the role of symbols in oil paintings: an ordinary dove, which conveyed the essence of truth and innocence, humility and tranquility – the connection of the Holy Spirit and the unity of the Church. A dove with an olive branch in its beak symbolized peace, and in Christianity it means the Annunciation. There are also two animals that symbolize diametrically opposed themes: the pelican is a symbol of eternal life, and the duck is a winter bird that symbolizes death (just don’t immediately look for a duck among your oil paintings – it’s all tied together as a religion, not for all paintings). The image of an eagle in religious oil paintings mainly symbolizes, as a messenger of heaven, justice and speed, a symbol of the ascent of the soul to God.

These are not all kinds of religious symbols in oil paintings, there are many of them, the main thing is to convey the idea that when touching on the topic of spirituality, you need to realize the seriousness of the role of every living thing in this world. The trend of using religious motifs in art can be traced through the centuries and across different cultures, for example, Da Vinci’s oil painting “The Last Supper,” depicting the scene of Christ’s last meal with his disciples.

Why is Art Important in Religion: An Integral Part

When approaching the answer to this question, we need to give a definition of art – this is one of the main means through which people can express their thoughts and feelings, and also convey their position about the world.
