Ben was born in October 1969 in Lumberton, North Carolina. He was born as the oldest of 9 siblings and step-siblings. His grandmother raised Ben in an extended family. His mom, Helen used to work in a local Converse shoe factory. She also served as a hotel maid.

Regarding his education, he studied at South Plantation High School. While attending high school, he lived with his stepfather whom he regards as his father. Later, he attended Florida State University and earned Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 1992.

Ben represented the family of an African-American driver, Genie McMeans, Jr. in 2002. Genie was shot by a White state trooper. Then, he represented the family of an African-American teenager, Martin Lee Anderson who died after being beaten by guards in a Florida youth detention center in 2006.

Crump represented the family of Trayvon Martin in 2012. Trayvon was fatally shot and killed by George Zimmerman in February 2012. That same year, he represented a 20-year-old African-American skateboarder, Ronald Weekley Jr., who was beaten by police in Venice.

In August 2012, he represented the family of a 35-year-old African-American woman, Alesia Thomas. Thomas died while he was in police custody. According to journalist Chuck Philips, Thomas died during Mary O’Callaghan’s brutal interrogation and custody.

Following then, he represented the family of Michael Brown and Tamir Rice. In 2015, he represented an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, Antonio Zambrano-Montes who was killed by three policemen in Washington. Crump started representing the family of 19-year-old Asian American, Christian Hall in early 2021.

The teenager was shot and killed by Pennsylvania State Troopers in December 2020. That same year, he represented the family of Daunte Wright and Henrietta Lacks. Crump recently came into the limelight for representing a 29-year-old black man, Tyre Nichols during a January 7 traffic stop.

Following the incident, five former Memphis police officers were charged with murder on Thursday in the death of Tyre Nichols. The body footage of the incident has already been viewed by Nichols’ family and their attorneys. The footage has been described as heinous, violent, and appalling.

The footage will be released to the public by officials on Friday. Crump addressed that five police officers are black and said that it’s not the police officer’s race that’s a determining factor in whether they would engage in excessive force.

Crump added that Nichols’ family is relieved that they have confirmed that the five officers will face criminal accountability in a court of law for what they have done to Tyre Nichols. They are also relieved to know that there will be criminal charges against them.

Ben Crump is married to Dr. Genae Angelique Crump. He met her first time over three decades ago while attending Florida State University. Together, the pair welcomed a loving daughter, Brooklyn Zeta Crump. They are also the adoptive parents of two of his nephews, JeMarcus Olajuwon and Chancellor Isiah.

Crump’s wife, Dr. Genae currently works as an Assistant Principal and the Director of Neglected & Delinquent Programs at Leon County Public Schools. She joined the board of a charitable organization, Colorful Talks in March 2022.

Ben’s office along with the Daunte Wright family was served a lawsuit by Wright’s son’s mother, Chyna Whitaker in 2022. A 20-year-old, Daunte Wright was fatally shot by police in Minneapolis on October 3, 2022. After the lawsuit was filed, Crump’s spokesperson told the press that that was strictly a family dispute between Daunte’s parents and Wright’s child’s mother.
