Mufti Menk is a leading global Islamic scholar from Zimbabwe. He is considered one of the most sought-after scholars in recent times due to his personable and down-to-earth approach. Mufti is also adored and loved for his lecture series, a Mufti Menk hallmark.

Menk was born on June 27, 1975, in Harare, Zimbabwe. His parents were Gujarati Indians who belong to the Bharachi Vohra Patel community. He was a son of a Muslim preacher, Maulana Musa Ibrahim Menk. Due to his immigrant parents, he is able to speak Gujarati Urdu.

Regarding his study, Menk initially studied with his father, memorizing the Quran and learning Arabic. Then, he attended St. Joh’s College (Harare) for senior school. Following that, he attended Katharia Darul Uloom and completed his religious education.

Mufti Menk is a known Islamic scholar who is the Grand Mufti of Zimbabwe’s Muslim community. He has been identified as Salafi and Deobandi by different sources. However, he has not stated his involvement clearly in either movement. But, he openly opposes terrorism and has also helped to curb religious extremism in the Maldives by pledging his aid. Menk urged Liberian Muslims to avoid Muslim-Christian violence in March 2018.

While urging Liberian Muslims, he argued that both Muslim and Christian people are brothers and sisters from one father, referring to the prophet, Adam. Menk further accuses western media of spreading the wrong information that Muslims are terrorists. While speaking to Gulf News, he told that everyone on the earth is a part of a family and no one has the right to force any belief on another. Menk has also published a book as a collection of his sayings titled Motivational Moments in 2018. After a year, he published the second edition of the book titled Motivational Moments 2.

Menk has also been in several controversies. In October 2017, Singapore banned him from reaching its borders for expressing views incompatible with its multicultural laws and policies. Menk was criticized for asserting that it is blasphemous for Mulsim communities to greet believers of other faiths during other festivals such as Deepavali or Christmas. His application for a short-term work pass was subsequently rejected which stemmed from his segregationist and divisive teachings.

Following the controversy, his own institution The Majlisul Ulama Zimbabwe released a statement regarding the ban saying it was regretful and dismaying. The institution further claimed Menk as an asset to multi-cultural and multi-religious Zimbabwe and the viewers should listen to his sermons in full. They also insisted on not judging him by seeing edited clips of a few minutes ignoring the moderate path he has chosen. Later, he clarified the issue in a youtube video saying that he actually meant to say that anyone must not force their beliefs onto others. Likewise, Menk was also banned by the Danish government from entering its border for two years in November 2018.

Menk was described as an openly homophobic Islamic preacher by The Huffington Post. He intended to visit six British Universities in 2013 as a part of the speaking tour. However, it was canceled after University officials and student unions expressed concern about his views. Menk got himself into controversy for his statement when he said “how can a person engage in acts of immorality with the same sex? Since the Qur’an clearly stated that it is wrong what you are doing.” He even referred to homosexuals as worse than animals.
