Early life
Chip Foose was born on October 13 in the year 1963 in Santa Barbara, California. His father owned a company, Project Design in Santa Barbara. When he was seven, he started working for his father’s company. He attended the Art Center College of Design in 1982 after being encouraged by the Ford designer, Alex Tremulis.
Nevertheless, he couldn’t complete his study due to financial difficulties and dropped out after two years. Foose later returned back to the Art Center to finish his incomplete study. He was able to study at the college after serving at Clenet Coachworks for four years. He graduated from college in 1990.

Chip began working full-time for Sternberger Design after finishing college graduation. During the time, he also worked part-time for hot rod designer, Boyd Coddington. He served for the Sternberger Design until 1993 and then worked for J Mays at Ford. However, Codding convinced him to work for him full-time. Foose was then made the president of Boyd Coddington’s company named Hot Rods by Boyd. For Coddington, he designed many creations like Boydster and Boydster II.
Foose started working on his own automotive and product design company in 1998 after leaving Hot Rods. At first, he set up the company in Orange, California. His first project car was Boydster II, which he built for Chuck Svatos. Likewise, he built the 0032 roadsters which won the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) trophy. Foose established the Foose Design in 2000.
Foose became popular in 2003 after his design and creation of Speedbird, a modified 2002 Ford Thunderbird that premiered in a TLC documentary. He received further recognition after the TLC program, Overhaulin’ made its debut in 2004. His unique 1969 Camaro convertible at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) was displayed in 2005. He received the coveted Ridler Award in 2002 during the 50th Anniversary Show of the Detroit Autorama.
Foose started limited production of Hemisfear, which is also known as the Foose Coupe in 2007. The Hemisfear was designed by Foose in 1990 while he worked at the Art Center. The Hemisfear was commissioned by JL Full Throttle in 2007, which had a partnership deal with Foose on building both the scale and 1: 1 Hemisfear. The first Foose Coupe supercar was eventually auctioned and sold for $340,000 to Atlanta vintage car dealer, Roger Burgess.
In 2007, he helped the Ridemakerz to start the customizable toy cars business. Before that, he provided the unique style elements for the interior and exterior of the $275 million expansion of Detroit’s casino and hotel, Motorcity Casino. Foose is still giving continuity on operating Foose Design and has been providing design consultations to Big Three Automakers.

Chip Foose is married to his longtime girlfriend, Lynn. His wife has always been supportive of his decision. In fact, Lynn and Foose started their first own automotive and product design company together. Chip was dating Lynn when he had nothing. At that time, he didn’t have enough earnings to complete his college education. After dating for some years, he eventually tied the knot with Lynn. As of now, they share two kids together named Brock and Katie.
