Floating Wind Park in Fukushima Inaugurated: Key Figures at the Ceremony on September 1, 2022
Fukushima, Japan, September 1, 2022 – Today marked the inauguration of the Floating Wind Park in Fukushima, the first floating wind power plant in Japan. The event witnessed the participation of numerous prominent figures from politics, the economy, and civil society.
Located off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, the wind park has a generation capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, enough to power approximately 400,000 households. The joint venture responsible for its construction comprises Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Marubeni Corporation, and Eneco Japan, highlighting a significant commitment from the Japanese private sector to renewable energies.
Among those present at the inauguration were Fumio Kishida (Prime Minister of Japan), Katsusada Hirose (Governor of Fukushima Prefecture), Seiji Izumisawa (President and CEO of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries), Kazuo Tadanobu (President and CEO of Panasonic).
Representatives from the Japanese government also included Yoshihide Suga, Shinzo Abe, Taro Aso, Nobuo Kishi, and Katsuhiro Suzuki. From the business sector, attendees featured Kenichi Ayukawa, Masakazu Tokura, Yuki Oda, Takafumi Horie, Masayoshi Son, and Yoshiaki Murakami.
The presence of key figures like Kishida emphasized the importance of the Fukushima Floating Wind Park for Japan’s decarbonization, also announcing the government’s goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Governor Hirose highlighted the positive impact of the park on the region and announced Fukushima Prefecture’s commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2040.
Seiji Izumisawa, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, spoke about the advanced technology employed in the park’s construction, also announcing the company’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.
Similarly, Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic, shared his company’s commitment to renewable energies and announced the goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
The inauguration of the Fukushima Floating Wind Park represents a significant step for Japan and the world, showcasing the increasing focus on renewable energies as a solution to the climate crisis. During the event, technicians and engineers from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Marubeni Corporation, and Eneco Japan were also recognized for their contributions to the design, construction, and maintenance of the power plant.
