Early life & Education

Kristi Noem was born on the 30th of November, 1971 in Watertown, South Dakota to parents, Ron and Corinne Arnold. She was raised by her parents along with her siblings in rural Hamlin County on their family ranch. Noem became a high school graduate in 1990. She got to work on her public speaking and promotional skills after she competed for the South Dakota Snow Queen title, which she won.

In 1990, she joined the Northern State University and came out holding a University degree in 1994. After she lost her father in a farm machinery accident, she joined the Watertown campus of Mount Marty College, and also took online classes from the University of South Dakota.

Kristi won a seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2006. At that time, she represented the 6th district as a Republican and won 39% of the vote in 2006. She was re-elected again in 2008 with 41% of the vote. In 2007, she was appointed as an assistant majority leader, which she served for four years until 2010. During her working tenure, she sponsored bills to lower the age of compulsory education to 16 in South Dakota.

Noem ran in the U. S. House of Representatives for the South Dakota’s at-large seat in 2010. She eventually won the Republican primary receiving a 42% of the vote against State Representative, Blake Curd. In 2012, she was re-elected to a second term where she defeated Democrat, Mattew Varilek with a vote margin of 57 to 43 percent.

Noem was again reelected to a third and fourth term in 2014 and 2016. She became the second woman of House GOP leadership after she was elected as liaison to the House Republican leadership in 2011 by the House Republican 87-member freshman class.

Kristi announced in November 2016 that she would be running for governor of South Dakota in 2018. She ultimately defeated Marty Jackley in the June 5 Republican primary with a vote margin of 56 to 44 percent. In November 2021, she made an announcement that she would be running for reelection as governor. On January 5, 2019, she was sworn in as a governor of South Dakota.

During the 2020 presidential election, she claimed that Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump with widespread voter fraud. She still remained in her words after Joe Biden was inaugurated in January, where she refused to accept that the election was free and fair. Noem was supposed to be one of Donald Trump’s three presidential electors for South Dakota, however, later she withdrew.
