Early Life 

Mase was born Mason Durell Betha on the 27th of August, 1975 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born to parents, Mason and P. K. Betha. He has a fraternal twin sister named Station Betha and four other siblings. Mase was 3 when his dad left the family. After that, his mom took him and his siblings to Harlem, New York. He had spent all his childhood living in Harlem.

Mase was sent back to Jacksonville by his mother when he was 13. At that time, he started getting in trouble. Then, he stayed in Florida with his relatives for two years. While living in Jacksonville, he started attending church. At 15 years of age, he returned to Harlem and started taking interest in basketball. He eventually became the lead point guard for the Manhattan Center High School team during the 1993 season.

Early on, he had hoped that he would join the National Basketball Association (NBA). However, his dream shattered after he couldn’t make a place in a Division I College because of poor academic scores. Then, he joined the State University of New York at Purchase where he started focusing more on writing music, performing, and producing demo tapes. At that time, he used to regularly perform at local nightclubs. In the end, he dropped out of college and began focusing on music full-time.

At that time, he said that he left music to find God in his heart. Mase also enrolled as a freshman at Clark Atlanta University that same year and started attending classes on August 19. Mase had become an ordained minister at that time. However, after 5 years, he returned to music with his third album “Welcome Back”.
