Ratmir Timashev is a technologist, philanthropist, and IT entrepreneur originally from Russia. He is the former CEO of Veeam Software. Timashev also supports the private charity foundation, The Timashev Family Foundation which recently made a donation of a record-setting $110 million gift to Ohio State University on Thursday, February 16.

Timashev was born on June 26, 1966, in Russia. Not much detail is known about his upbringing, parents, and early life. Regarding his education, he studied at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and earned two master’s degrees in Physics. After that, he attended the Ohio State University and graduated in Chemical Physics in 1996.

The first business that he started with his college roommate was an internet e-commerce start-up. Ratmir and his partner initially built an online store where they would sell computer parts.

Timashev and his partner, Andrei Baronov created several tools for Windows NT administrators in 1996. Surprisingly, they earned more revenue from selling tools than computer parts. After that, Timashev set up a new company named Aelita Software.

Ratmir eventually started the company in 1997, which focused on Windows Server systems management and monitoring software. Over the next eight years, the company grew to $30 million in sales. In 2004, the company’s prime competitor purchased the company for around $115 million.

Even though he had sold the company, he was still working in the company as a General Manager and looked after the new Windows Enterprise Management business unit. After working for a year, he left the company at the beginning of 2005. Later at the end of 2005, he came up with the idea of doing something new for virtual environments similar to what they had done for Windows NT.

Ratmir and Baronov then started a new company named Veeam Software in 2006. The first products of the company were designed for monitoring and managing the VMware ESX visualization platform. After two years, the software company came up with their backup tool named Veeammmm Backup & Replication.

The backup tool later became the company’s flagship product and also helped the company enter the backup market. At the end of 2015, the software company reportedly generated $474 million in revenue with over 1950 people employed worldwide.

Timashev along with his partner, Baronov established ABRT Venture Fund in 2006. The company’s name came from the first letters of the two founders’ names. Through the company, they mainly make investments in eastern and central European-based companies.

Similarly, the company makes investments in startup companies providing its own specialist team. Later, the company helps startups to enable sales marketing and also makes an effort in other necessary activities. Timashev has also been actively involved in philanthropic activities.

Ratmir and his family foundation, the Timashev Family Foundation recently announced a gift donation of $110 million to Ohio State University. With the donation amount, the University will establish a new on-campus center and interdisciplinary program focusing on software innovation.

Before that, in June 2020, the pair provided $17 million through their charitable foundation to Ohio State’s College of Arts and Sciences. At that time, then-Presient, Michael Drake appreciated Angela and Ratmir’s wonderful gift for the University that helped elevate the Columbus campus and University broadly for future generations.
