Early life

Rich Paul was born on the 16th of December, 1981 in Cleveland, Ohio. His father used to run a store, R & J Confectionery in Glenville, and just above his father’s store, there was a one-bedroom apartment, where he grew up and spent his childhood days. He lost his father in 1999 who died due to cancer.

Rich studied at a Roman Catholic high school. Following his high school graduation, he was mentored on selling vintage jerseys by Distant Replays owner, Andy Hyman. Paul would sell the throwback jerseys in his trunk in Cleveland, that he purchased from Atlanta.

Paul first came into notice after he caught the attention of NBA player, LeBron James in 2002 at the Akron-Canton Airport. At that time, James was impressed by his authentic throwback jersey of a former football quarterback, Warren Moon.

Rich remained in contact with James and later he sold him a Joe Namath Rams jersey and a Magic Johnson Lakers jersey. After the NBA draft in 2003, he joined James alongside his childhood friends, Randy Mims and Maverick Carter as a part of his small inner circle. After some time, he started working under basketball executive, Leon Rose who made negotiated on James’ extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers at Creative Artists Agency in 2006.

Paul and James left their association with Leon Rose and Creative Artists Agency in 2012. Then, Paul started his own agency which he named Klutch Sports Group. In 2013, he enlisted Mark Termini to get the NBA contract negotiations for Klutch Sports Group. As a part of his job, Mark Termini was able to negotiate $1.4 billion in NBA contracts for the Klutch clients from 2014 to 2019. Klutch Sports had around 25 clients by 2019 and brokered more than $1 billion in contracts.

In 2020, Paul was offered a partnership deal with the United Talent Agency (UTA) to run its sports division. He was able to expand the sports divisions’ client numbers from 4 to 23, and later, he became one of the board of directors on UTA. In August 2019, Paul was somewhere attacked by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) after they implemented a rule for agents that required them to hold a bachelor’s degree. The media called the regulation Rich Paul Rule, as he was not a college graduate.

However, later the NCAA decided to step back and eventually changed the regulation. During the NBA All-Star Weekend with General Mills and SocialWorks in 2020, he launched “Klutch Conversations”, which would encourage financial literacy among young people.

In August 2021, he was sued by professional basketball player, Nerlens Noel for breaching fiduciary duty, contract and for neglecting his role in turning down a contract offer of $70 million from the Dallas Mavericks.
