Early life
Anson Williams was born on the 25th of September, 1949 in Los Angeles, California. He was born to Haskell Heimlick who legally changed the spelling of his family name to Heimlick. He changed the spelling as the Heimlich maneuver refers to treating choking victims.
Anson studied at Burbank High School. While in school, he played as a captain of the track team. In addition, he also participated and showed his acting skill in multiple school productions. He appeared in a commercial for McDonald’s in 1971.

Williams played the role of Potsie Weber in the comedy-anthology series “Love, American Style” in 1972. Later on, the spin-off of the series titled “Happy Days” was made introducing new characters such as Richie Cunningham, Richie’s mother Marion, and other characters. In the first season, Anson received second billing after Ron Howard who portrayed Richie. The new season mainly focused on Rhicie and Potsie.
Anson was one of the few characters who remained throughout the series. However, his appearances frequently decreased in the later seasons. While appearing on Happy Days, he recorded and released a song titled “Deeply” in 1977. The song charted at 93 on the Hot 100. After a successful stint on Happy Days, he began his new journey as a TV director.
Williams started off his directorial venture by directing short programs for adolescent-age children. The short programs include “The Drug Knot”, “No Greater Gift” and “Lone Star Kid”. In addition to that, he also directed many episodes for many TV series such as “The Pretender’, “Beverly Hills, 90210”, “Xena: Warrior Princess”, and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, “The Legendary Journeys” and “Charmed”.
Even though he was getting recognized as a successful director and producer, he made a comeback on Happy Days in retrospective ways. In 1996, he appeared as himself in Happy Days themed “Boy Meets World Episode”. In 2003, he directed an episode of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”.
Besides being a talented actor and director, he is also a businessman. He started a chain of diners, Big AI’s with fellow Happy Days cast member, Ai Molinaro in 1987. However, the business later went defunct. Then, he founded a cosmetics company, Starmaker Products, and was featured as a speaker at the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office in April 2008.
Williams along with his four Happy Days co-stars filed a $10 million breach-of-contract lawsuit against CBS in April 2011. The Happy Days stars claimed that they had not received merchandising revenues that they owed under their contracts. In addition, they claimed to not receive revenues from show-related items.
Anson announced his major candidacy for his hometown of Ojai, California on July 7. He had announced his campaign earlier during an Ojai City Council meeting on June 28. Williams stated that the California city needs leadership that inspires a collaborative team. He would be campaigning against present Ojai Mayor, Betsy Stix and would officially declare his candidacy by filing the appropriate paperwork at the City Clerk’s office on July 18.

Anson Williams married his on-screen sweetheart, Lorrie Mahaffey in 1978. They were dating for several months before their chemistry reached its peak when they appeared together in an episode, Potsie Gets Pinned. The pair turned into a married couple in 1978. They lived together for eight years and ended their romance with divorce in 1986. They share a daughter together named Hannah Lily. Even after their divorce, they continued working together on different shows.
Williams didn’t stay single for a long time and began a new relationship with Jackie Gerken. He met Jackie after two years of his divorce from Mahaffey. Williams exchanged wedding vows with Gerken in 1988 and lived together for thirty years. They have three kids, Olivia, Gabriella, and Stella. Williams filed for divorce in 2019 but, he soon withdrew his filing claiming that he and Gerken have agreed to live separate lives but will be sticking together for their children.
