Byron Donalds is a politician from New York City. He represented the 80th district in the Florida House of Representatives for four years from 2016 to 2020. Donalds unsuccessfully ran for the U. S. House of Representatives in 2012. He defeated his Democratic opponent Cindy Banyai and was elected to Congress in 2020.
Donalds was born on October 28, 1978, in Brooklyn, New York City. He grew up in Crown Heights. Donalds was raised by his single mother along with two siblings. He studied at Nazareth Regional High School and graduated in 1996. Then, he joined Florida A&M University and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Marketing.

Byron Donalds started his career by working in the finance, insurance, and banking industries. His early work experiences came at TIB Bank, Moran Wealth, and CMG Life Services. He was motivated to run for office after he was involved in the Tea Party movement. Byron ran as a candidate in Florida’s 19th congressional district for the U. S. House of Representatives in 2012. However, he couldn’t win the election and finished as a fifth of six candidates.
In 2016, he was selected to the Florida House of Representatives. Then, he ran for Florida’s 19th congressional district as the Republica nominee. He eventually won a Republican primary by 770 votes more than State Representative, Dane Eagle. Later, a rumor was spread out through anonymous text messages that he was dropping out of the race. He later clarified through a tweet that the messages were illegal and were not dropping out. Byron defeated the Democratic nominee, Cindy Banyai in the November general election.
After winning the election, Byron said that he would focus on policy related to water quality in Southwest Florida. He also became only the sixth person to represent Florida since its creation in 1983. During his tenure as a U. S. representative, he was identified as a participant in the Freedom Force group which claimed that they fight against socialism in America. Furthermore, he voted to object to Arizona and Pennsylvania’s certification of electors in the 2020 presidential election.
Byron was voted for as Speaker of the House election by Chip Roy on January 3, 2023. However, he instead voted for Kevin McCarthy on the first two ballots. Later on the third ballot, he switched his vote to Jim Jordan. On the fourth ballot, he was nominated by Chip Roy again to be Speaker of the House. Byron received 20 votes on the fourth ballot of the election. On the fifth ballot, received 20 votes and was nominated by Lauren Boebert. Later, Scott Perry nominated him on the sixth ballot and Dan Bishop nominated him on the seventh ballot. Subsequently, Andy Biggs nominated him on the eighth ballot.
Donald eventually emerged as the choice of conservative holdouts in the election for Speaker of the House. In fact, he received 20 votes for speaker in each of the 3 roll calls compared to McCarthy’s 201 votes each time. Due to that, McCarthy is prevented from reaching a majority of 218 votes. He is considered a rising star of the Republican party due to his aggressive expressions and conservative values.
