David Bromstad was born in August 1973 in Cokato, Minnesota. He was born to Richard Harold David Bromstad and Diane Marlys Bromstad. David grew up with three elder siblings, Dean, Dynelle, and Dyonne. For his study, he attended the Wayzata High School in art and design.

David initially wanted to become a Disney animator. While chasing his dream, he joined Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota. After college graduation, he began his professional career by working as a Disney illustrator. Then, he began working on his company named Bromstad Studio after he was replaced on leave as a Disney illustrator.

Bromstad then shifted his place to Miami Beach and tried his luck as host of HGTV’s new show called Design Star. In the reality competition, he competed against 9 other potential designers and in the end, came out as a winner. He also won the grand prize, a car, and the opportunity to host his own TV show on HGTV.

David came back as a guest judge in the first episode of the second season of HGTV Design Star. He appeared in the reality show to give moral support to the finalists in Challenge 7: Island Dreams. David began working as a mentor on the reality show from Season 6. Afterward from Season 7, he started hosting the reality show on HGTV.

Bromstard hosted Design Star All-Stars in 2012. Then, he began appearing on HGTV’s Design at Your Door. In the second season, he appeared as one of the competitors of Rock the Block, where he was partnered with a designer, Tiffany Brooks. Other than Design Star, he has hosted other shows on HGTV such as Color Splash and My Lottery Dream Home. The thirteen seasons of My Lottery My Dream started premiering on HGTV on July 22, 2022. The first episode titled Philly to Fayetteville first aired on July 22. The reality show follows David and his instant millionaire clients. In the series, David takes lottery winners on over-the-top house hunts and help find them their new dream homes. The series is based on the concept of whether the lucky lottery winners spend all their winnings on an extravagant mansion or they settle for a humble sound investment.

David Bromstad is openly gay. He was previously dating his boyfriend named Jeffrey Glasco. David dated Jeffrey for eight years and broke up after being in 11 years long relationship in 2015. David and Jeffrey separated because of David’s drinking and drug issues. His ex-boyfriend, Jeffrey also filed a lawsuit against him for breaching an oral nuptial-like cohabitation contract and partition of the condo the duo shared.

David and Jeffrey started dating in 2004 after meeting on Valentine’s Day at a pub in Orlando. The two soon got along with each other and dated until 2015. They were about to get married, however, Glasko put an end to their relationship alleging that David was involved in illicit drugs and alcohol. Due to that, Glasko was emotionally and financially exhausted.
