Katie Porter is a Democratic politician, lawyer, and law professor from Iowa. She represented the 45th congressional district for four years from 2019 to 2023. Then, she became the representative from California’s 47th congressional district in 2023. Katie announced a 2024 Senate bid on Tuesday, January 10 launching her campaign for Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat.

Porter was born in January 1974 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She spent her early days growing up in the small farming community of Fort Dodge. Her parents are Dan and Liz Porter. Katie’s father was a farmer-turned-banker and her mother was a founder of the magazine and TV program, Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting.

Porter is a graduate of Phillips Academy and later she graduated from Yale University in American studies. Porter also studied at Harvard Law School and graduated with her Juris Doctor in 2001.

Katie Porter started working as a law clerk for Judge, Richard S. Arnold after graduating from Harvard. Then, she practiced in the business law firm, Stoel Rives LLP. Likewise, she also worked as the project director for the Business Bankruptcy Project of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. Along with that, she also taught as a law professor at the Las Vegas School of Law.

Porter was appointed as the state’s independent monitor of banks by the California Attorney General, Kamala Harris in March 2012. There, she oversaw a nationwide $25 billion mortgage settlement and the banks’ implementation of $9.5 billion for Californians in settlement reforms.

Katie also ran for the U. S. House of Representatives in the 2018 elections against Republican Mimi Walters. She eventually defeated Walters and became the first Democrat to represent the 45th district since it was created in 1953. She along with Harley Rouda also became the first non-Hispanic Democrats who represented Orange County-based districts.

In 2020, she ran for reelection to a second term and there she advanced from the top-two primary in the first place. In the reelection, she faced off against the Republican Mission Viejo, Mayor Greg Raths. She won against the Raths receiving 53.5% of the vote.

In 2022, she was reelected in California’s 47th congressional district where she defeated the Republican nominee, Scott Baugh receiving 51.6% of the vote. While representing the 45th congressional district, she introduced a bill, the Help America Run Act that allowed people who were running for the House or Senate to use campaign contributions for the payment of healthcare premiums, child care, elder care, and dependent care.

Even though the bill was passed in October 2019, it wasn’t taken up by the Senate. Porter announced on Tuesday, January 10 that she was running for the United States Senate in 2024 for the seat occupied by 89-year-old Sen. Dianne Feinsten. However, Feinstein is yet to announce whether she will retire or not. Likewise, it has been plagued by news reports that raise questions about the 89 years old mental fitness. Feinstein will be 91 years of age at the end of her current term.

Katie Porter was married to Matthew Hoffman for a decade from 2003 to 2013. She survived domestic abuse while she was with her ex-husband. Katie shared that her former partner forcefully grabbed her hands while she was flossing her teeth in the bathroom.

He eventually came towards her and ripped the floss out of them and threw it away. Later, he punched the wall so hard that knocked the lights out after shattering the faceplate on the light switch. While explaining to a judge, Matthew told that he was angry because Katie had been brushing her teeth too slowly.

Katie shares three kids with her ex-husband. In November 2022, her 14 years old son, Paul Hoffman praises Katie’s work in Congress saying that she absolutely wrecks corporate CEOs. Paul also predicted that Katie will come out on top in her unnervingly close race. While introducing Katie to a cheering crowd, her son told her that right after Trump won in 2016, she had told him that she would be running for Congress. After that, Paul and his brother, Luke looked at each other and said to her that this hobby isn’t going to last long. Nevertheless, they were proved wrong by their mom.
