Early life

Latrell Sprewell was born on the 8th of September, 1970 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was born to Panela Sprewell and Latoska Field. His parents separated while he was studying in high school. Before separation, he was staying with his parents in Flint, Michigan. After his parent’s separation, he shifted back to Milwaukee with his mother.

Latrell studied at Washington High School in Milwaukee. While in high school, he was a part of the Three Rivers Community College Raiders basketball team. In 1990, he attended the University of Alabama and played basketball for the University’s team for 2 years.

Sprewell was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the 1992 NBA draft. During his rookie season, he started 69 of the 77 games where he averaged 15.4 points per game. He showed his tremendous form for three years in 1994, 1995, and 1997 and also played on the Western Conference All-Star team. In December 1997, he had a significant blemish on his career after he attacked then Warriors head coach, P. J. Carlesimo.

Sprewell had actually told the head coach to keep his distance when he yelled at him to make crisper passes. He even threatened to kill the head coach when Carlesimo approached him. Sprewell choked him for 7-10 seconds in front of his assistant coaches and teammates. After the incident, he was suspended for 10 games without pay. The NBA also suspended him for a year. While he was serving his suspension, he was charged with reckless driving in a 90-mile-per-hour accident that made two people injured.

Sprewell was not able to play due to the NBA lockout until February 1999. Then, he was traded to New York Knicks and played 37 games in that season. Sprewell showed his outstanding game in the 2003-04 season where he became the league’s highest-scoring trio along with Kevin Garnett, and Sam Cassell.

In October 2004, he was offered a 3-year contract extension by the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, he felt insulted by the offer and publicly expressed outrage. He was without a contract in the 2005-06 season. During the time, his agent, Bob Gist claimed that Sprewell would rather retire than play for the NBA minimum salary.

Sprewell then received the contract offer from the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks in March 2006. However, he failed to respond to both teams and remained a free agent at the end of the season.

In his NBA career, he started 868 of the 913 games and made an average score of 18.8 ppg, 4.1 RPG, and 4.2 APG. His playing career average was 19.7 ppg, 4.3 RPG, and 3.4 APG. At the end of his second season, he was named to the All-NBA First Team. That same year, he was elected to the All-NBA Defensive second team.

Latrell Sprewell was married to Candace Cabbill. According to the sources, he got married to Candace at the University of Alabama in 1989. Together they share four kids. Their relationship dwindled after he went through the financial crisis.

His ex-wife, Candace also sued him for $200 million for violating the relationship agreement that they both made in 1989. In August 2006, he was accused by a 21-year-old female of having consensual sex aboard his yacht. In the end, he sought a restraining order against the accuser with civil remedies.
