Early Life

Mason Cox was born in Highland Village, Texas on March 14, 1991. He is the youngest son of his parents, Jeanette and Phil. His two older brothers, Nolan and Austin Cox are also athletes. He received a University graduation degree from Oklahoma State University in 2014.

Mason Cox initially played basketball and joined the Oklahoma State Cowgirls’ scout team. He was then asked to join the men’s basketball team as a walk-on. Cox scored seven points while he was on the field for 57 minutes.

Mason was signed by the Collingwood Football Club on May 30, 2014, after traveling to Australia for a second combine. During that time, he played in the Victorian Football League for the Collingwood Reserves team throughout the 2015 season. Soon, he became popular for his goal-kicking accuracy in the league.

Thereafter, he impressed with his skills in the 2016 NAB Challenge pre-season series where he kicked 2 goals against Geelong. Despite showing good form, he could not elevate at the beginning of the season. He made his AFL debut in the Anzac Day match in April 2016.

Cox was quick enough to take his first mark within the first 80 seconds and scored the goal of the match with his first kick. The Collingwood team eventually got the victory by 69 points. In September 2017, he signed a 3-year contract extension with Collingwood.

In the 2018 season, he continued his good form and kicked a career-high five goals in the Queen’s Birth match at the MCG. Subsequently, he received the Neale Daniher trophy as best on the ground. Following that, he gave a man-of-the-match performance against Richmond in the 2018 Preliminary Final. In the game, he kicked 3 goals and took many contested marks.

Cox kicked two goals in the 2018 Grand Final during the third quarter. After that, he dominated in the elimination final game against West Coast in the 2020 AFL final series. In the 2019 game against Gold Coast Suns, he suffered a torn retina in one eye. Due to that, the AFL permitted him to wear prescription sunglasses in the competition.

Mason also spent two weeks in bed in a dark room for 45 minutes of every hour. He also called the moment probably the darkest moment of his life. Cox was willing to get a multi-year contract at Collingwood. Along with that, he was also seeking to become an Australian citizen so that he could fulfill his desire to live the rest of his life in Australia.

Cox was eventually accepted as an Australian citizen at the end of March 2020. In June 2022, he officially became a citizen of Australia and attended a special citizenship ceremony with over one hundred conferees at the MCG. A year later, Cox was featured on the United States version of 60 Minutes to open up on his AFL journey.

In America’s 60 minutes version, Cox described AFL sport as completely unique. He also mentioned AFL as the roughest sport in the world stating the game as the mix of football, basketball, soccer, and cricket. He even revealed that the game has really no rules.

The TV show host, Wertheim compared Cox as one of the most unlikely players in the history of the sport. Wertheim also said that Cox is the tallest player ever to suit up who lived the first 23 years of his life not knowing that the sport of footy even existed.

Mason Cox was in a relationship with Geva Mentor in 2019. His ex-girlfriend is an accomplished netball player representing England in many Commonwealth Games. However, the pair didn’t carry on their affair for long as they separated in October 2019. Mason is not dating anyone at the moment.
