Early Life

Shaq Barrett was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 7, 1992. He was raised by his parents Donyetta Hawkins and Steven Barrett. He studied at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and later transferred to Colorado State University.

Shaq Barrett began playing college football in 2010 at the University of Nebraska Omaha sports team. After the 2010 season, he played for Colorado State. He played the Colorado State teams for three seasons from 2011 to 2013.

In 2013, he was named Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. As an undrafted free agent, he received interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos. The Denver Broncos eventually signed Shaq in May 2014.

Barrett was waived as a part of the Broncos’ final roster cuts in August 2014. However, he cleared waivers the following day and was signed to their practice squad. In October 2014, he was promoted to Broncos’ active roster. He was subsequently signed to the 53-man roster game against the San Francisco 49ers.

After joining the Buccaneers, Barrett entered the field competing against his former team Broncos during a week 3 game. He was able to lead his game toward a 28-10 road victory. After recording six total tackles and two sacks, he was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. On January 1, 2021, he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Shaq signed a four-year contract extension with the Buccaneers in March 2021. In the 2021 season, he recorded 4 tackles against the Dallas Cowboys and two tackles against the Atlanta Falcons. Barrett also performed well against the Chicago Bears recording four tackles, a fumble recovery, and a forced fumble.

Barrett showed his exceptional form in the 2021-22 NFL playoffs where he recorded an interception and a pass deflection. Then, he recorded three tackles against the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round. In the 2022 season, he suffered a torn Achilles during a week 8 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Barrett lost his two-year-old daughter, Arrayah on April 30, 2023. The authorities reported that the NFL player’s daughter drowned in a swimming pool at their house on Sunday. The youngest daughter of Barrett fell into the pool around 9:30 and was taken to a hospital in Tampa. Unfortunately, she couldn’t be survived and was pronounced dead.
