Montrezl Harrell was born on January 26, 1994, in Tarboro, North Carolina. He was born to Samuel and Selena Harrell. He grew up with two younger brothers named Cadarius and Quatauis.

Harrell studied at the North Edgecombe High School, where he played as a power forward. After high school, he prepped for a year at the Hargrave Military Academy. While playing at Hargrave, he made an average score of 25.2 points and 13.6 rebounds in each game. He also led the team with a 38-1 victory.
