Early life

Ncuti Gatwa was born on October 15 in the year 1992 in Nyarugenge, Kigali, Rwanda. He was born to Tharcisse Gatwa who is a journalist by profession. His family settled down in Scotland during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. He grew up in two places, Edinburgh and Dunfermline.

Gatwa initially studied at the Boroughmuir High School. Then he attended the Dunfermline High School. After some time, he moved to Glasgow where he studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting from the academy in 2013.

Gatwa joined the Dundee Repertory Theatre acting graduation scheme following his graduation from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Gatwa started his acting career in 2014 after he appeared in a small role in the British TV sitcom “Bob Servant”. He then appeared in a supporting role in the novel-based miniseries “Stonemouth” in 2015. He appeared in the Kneehigh Theatres production of 946 in the same year. The theatre production was adapted from English book author, Michael Morpurgo’s book “The Amazing Story Adolphus Tips”.

In 2016, he portrayed the character of Demetrius in the production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, which was directed by English theatre director and actress, Emma Rice at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Gatwa got his breakthrough role in 2018 when he was confirmed as Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy-drama series “Sex Education”. The Netflix show garnered positive reviews from critics after it was released in 2019. Gatwa’s performance was also praised by both critics and audiences. He earned numerous awards for delivering exceptional performance in the series. The actor received the BAFTA Scotland Award in 2020 and earned 3 nominations in the category of the Best male Comedy Performance at the BAFTA Television Award.

Gatwa was announced as the fourteenth incarnation of the doctor on the BBC’s popular science-fiction TV show “Doctor Who” on May 8, 2022. He was cast for the role in February.
