Robert Glasper is a jazz pianist from Texas. He is the recipient of five Grammy awards. Robert received his first Grammy Award in 2013 for his R&B album, Black Radio. He was awarded Grammy for the fifth time at the 2023 Grammy Awards on February 5.

Glasper was born on April 6, 1978, in Houston, Texas. He was born to Kim Yvette Glasper whom he considers his earlier music influence. His mom used to sing jazz and blues professionally. Robert used to go along with his mom on club dates.

Regarding his education, he studied at Elkins High School and attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Glasper later attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York. While he was in tenth grade, he got the opportunity to perform with the jazz band at Texas Southern University.

Glasper performed for the public first time when his mother was working as music director at the East Wind Baptist Church. He gave performances at three churches, Baptist, Seventh-day Adventist, and Catholic. In fact, he developed his sound first time in church.

Robert started playing while studying at The New School. At that time, he went on a tour as a sideman with bassist Christian McBride and trumpeters, Roy Hargrove and Terence Blanchard. Glasper later developed a musical bond with his New schoolmate, Bila.

In the meantime, he was embedded in a burgeoning hip-hop and neo-soul movement along with artists, The Roots, Jill Scott, and J Dilla. At the same time, he also became the music director for Yasiin Bey. In 2002, he dropped his first album, Mood with Fresh Sound New Talent.

Robert then released his debut album on Blue Note Records titled Canvas in 2005. In the album, he formed a trio lineup with Damion Reid on drums and Vicente Archer on bass. In 2007, he released his third album, In My Element. The album includes songs that he had written in honor of his mother and hip-hop producer, J Dilla.

Glasper dropped his fifth album, Black Radio in February 2012 featuring performances by hip-hop artists Bilal, Lalah, Lupe, Yasin Bey, and Erykah Badu. The album received critical acclaim and achieved commercial success. It peaked at the 10th spot on Billboard’s Top Current Albums chart.

Thereafter, he dropped his sixth studio album, Black Radio 2 in October 2013. Along with releasing music albums, he has also worked as a composer, producer, and arranger for the movie, Miles Ahead in 2015. He received attention for his prominent role on the singer, Kendrick Lamar’s album, To Pimp a Butterfly in 2016.

In January 2022, Robert announced on his Instagram page that he would be dropping the third installment in his Black Radio series titled Black Radio III. The album was eventually released via Loma Vista Recordings on February 25, 2022. Glasper also received Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards on February 5, Sunday.

After winning the Grammy, Chris Brown voiced his frustration in his Instagram stories. Brown posted a picture of Glasper and wrote, Y’all playing. Who da f–k is this? with a series of crying laughing emojis. However, Brown later issued a groveling apology to Glasper for throwing a temper tantrum over his win at Grammy Awards.
