Russell Henley was born on April 12, 1989, in Macon, Georgia. He was born to Chapin and Sally Henley. Russell studied at the Stratford Academy. Then, he attended the University of Georgia. There he played golf for four years. Russell was awarded the Haskins Award in 2020 as the most outstanding collegiate golfer.

As an amateur golfer, he competed in the U. S. Open in 2010. That same year, he competed in the two Nationwide Tour events. Henley registered a win at the Stadion Classic at UGA in 2011. With the victory, he became the second amateur to get victory on the Nationwide Tour.

He also made a place for the upcoming master.

Russell claimed his third PGA Tour victory at the Shell Houston Open in April 2017. Although he struggled in the beginning he was able to shoot a double-bogey and ten birdies in the final round.
