Early life

Tom Anderson was born on the 8th of November, 1970 in San Diego, California. He was born to Ernie Anderson and Edwina (nee Gough). His father was also an entrepreneur. Tom studied at San Pasqual High in California. He was a computer hacker when he was a teenager.

Anderson was known under the pseudonym, Lord Flathead. Earlier, he was able to hack the security of Chase Manhattan Bank. Then, he prompted a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raid. After a while, he joined the University of California, Berkeley, where he majored in English and rhetoric. He eventually became the lead singer of a band, Swank.

Following graduation, he lived in Taiwan for some time and then returned to the United States. He studied film at the University of California, Los Angeles. Initially, he worked in a digital storage company as a product tester and copywriter. It was in 2000 when he met his future business partner, Chris DeWolfe. At that time, Tom was still studying at film school and searching for a way to earn extra money. He eventually got a job at XDrive after answering a flyer advertisement.

Initially, he founded the website as a reaction to the social network game, Friendster. The website further built its policy of blocking fake name accounts. Myspace became popular after Intermix Media was founded as the successor of eUniverse.

Tom became the president of the company after Myspace and Intermix Media were sold to News Corp. The company was purchased by News Corp for $580 million in 2005. Tom shared some dissatisfaction after the acquisition as he had to take more time on getting people to agree on things. In 2009, he was replaced as President of News Corp. Tom was replaced by a profile named Today On MySpace or T.O.M. He was also no longer the default friend on Myspace by 2010.

Tom made an announcement in late May 2012 that he would be soon serving as an adviser at RocketFrog Interactive the 16-person company that created a Facebook app. Though, he didn’t mention any advisory roles during an interview in September 2014. In November 2018, he shared a tweet where he wrote “enjoying being retired”. Likewise, he shared a tweet in January 2021 stating that he is enjoying the good life and has adopted a new hoppy, Photography.

On June 25, 2025, he tweeted “excited to be a SpaceX investor” and tagged Tesla CEO, Elon Musk in the post. However, it is not yet confirmed whether he has invested in SpaceX or not. He has reportedly dabbled in the real estate market and is currently working as a traveling photographer.
