Early life

Byron Allen was born on the 22nd of April, 1961 in Detroit, Michigan. He spent his childhood days growing up in Los Angeles. Since his childhood, he developed an interest in show business. His mother, Carolyn Folks used to work as a publicist in NBC studios, and he would most of the time accompany his mom to her workplace.

Byron was 14 when he gathered up his first stand-up routine. He had also started performing on amateur nights at various comedy clubs in the Los Angeles area. His stand-up comedy act was noticed by the comedian, Jimmie Walker who invited him to join his comedy writing team. He got to work alongside two promising young comedians, David Letterman and Jay Leno. Byron appeared on the small screen the first time when he was 18  years old on the late-night talk show “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”.

Allen’s early roles in TV came on the NBC series “Real People”, where he worked as a regular presenter. He was offered the show after his one-night gig on The Tonight Show was hugely appreciated by audiences. Allen joined the cast of the Real People at the beginning of the second season. While he co-hosted the show, he got to learn many aspects of the TV show such as directing, producing, advertising, and the financial part on how money worked in the entertainment industry.

In 1992, his TV show “Jammin” was presented as “kickin’ It with Bryon Allen” and it ran successfully for over 21 seasons. In 1993, he put his first step into TV production in Los Angeles by founding the media and entertainment company, Entertainment Studios. The company launched its first weekly series “Entertainers with Byron Allen”.

Byron’s entertainment company acquired the pay TV channel, The Weather Channel in 2018. Following year, he made a partnership deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group to acquire Fox Sports Networks.

In 2009, he became the first TV entrepreneur to launch a portfolio of six 24-hour HD TV networks simultaneously which includes Comedy, Pets Cars, Recipe, ES, and MyDestination.TV. According to The Hollywood Reporter, at present, his companies produce over 30 nationally syndicated programs which earn annual revenue of over $100 million.

Byron Allen is currently preparing a bid to purchase the NFL’s Denver Broncos. He was actually approached by NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, and CEO of the New England Patriots, Bob Kraft in 2019. He would be the first black majority owner of a National Football League team if his bid for the Denver Broncos would be successful.

Byron Allen has been married to TV producer, Jennifer Lucas since September 2007. Their wedding ceremony occurred at the Hotel Bel-Air, affiliated with Los Angeles County’s deputy commissioner of civil marriages, Robert A. Ringler.
