Early Life

Da Brat’s real name is Shawntae Harris and she was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 14, 1974, to her parents Beverly Calloway and David Ray McCoy. Her mom, Beverly was a city bus driver, and her dad is a businessman. She grew up in two different households. Brat has lived partly with his mom and grandmother. She used to sing in the choir at the Apostolic church as a child.

Brat has a paternal half-sister, LisaRaye McCoy, who is famous for her portrayal of Diana Armstrong in the movie “The Players Club”. Brat has studied at the Kenwood Academy, from where she completed her sophomore and junior year study. While attending the academy, she played basketball and ran track. In 1992, she eventually graduated from the Academy of Scholastic Achievement.

Brat received her big break in 1992 after she registered a win in a local rap contest which was sponsored by Yo! MTV Raps. After winning the contest, she was introduced to the record producer, Jermaine Dupri by the young rap duo, Kris Kross. Jermaine later signed to her to record label So So Def.

In 1994, she dropped her first studio album titled “Funkdafield”. The album became a big hit, which went platinum and eventually made her the first female solo rapper to sell 1 million album copies.

Brat’s platinum debut album’s title song Funkdafield peaked at No. 1 on the rap singles chart, and at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1996, she dropped her second studio album titled “Anuthatantrum”, which include the hit song “Ghetto Love”. Following that in the rest of the 1990s, she became popular for making featured appearances on other R&B singers’ and rappers’ albums.

However, the album failed to create the same magic as her previously released albums.

Brat pleaded guilty in 2001 after she battered a woman with a gun in an Atlanta nightclub. She had a dispute with a woman over VIP seating in the nightclub. Due to misdemeanor reckless conduct, she spent a year’s probation and performed 80 hours of community service.

Brat likewise pleaded guilty to aggravated assault charges after she had an altercation with a waitress at a Halloween party at Studio 72 nightclub in October 2007. As a punishment, she spent 3 years in prison, received 7 years of probation, and performed 200 hours of community service.
