Denny McCarthy was born on the 4th of March, 1993 in Takoma Park, Maryland. He was born to Elena and Dennis McCarthy. He grew up with a brother, Ryan, and 2 sisters. His brother played college golf at Loyola University Maryland. Likewise, his two sisters, Cristina played college lacrosse and Michaele plays lacrosse at Virginia Tech.

McCarthy started playing golf competitively at 10 years of age on the junior golf circuit. He won a lot of games while competing on the MAPGA junior tour. Denny studied at the Georgetown Preparatory School, where he played basketball and varsity golf. Then, he attended the University of Virginia. There, he played college golf and has been a two-time All-American.

In 2010, he competed on the Junior Ryder Cup team and played with professional golfers, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Ollie Schniederjans. In a senior year at the University of Virginia, he competed in the 2014 World Amateur Team Championship and led U. S. to victory. In the final round, he posted 8-under 64 and became the only American golfer to shoot in the 60s all 4 days.

Denny finished 5th in the tournament and then in 2015, he was chosen to compete on the U. S. Walker Cup team. There, he competed with Beau Hossler, who was his former Eisenhower Trophy teammate. That same year, he won the 2015 Porter Cup and clutch play. The win helped him to earn a spot on the team.

Previously as an amateur, he won the Maryland Amateur twice in 2013 and 2014. Likewise, he won the Maryland Open three times in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Then, he competed at the 2015 U. S. Open and finished tied for 42.

McCarthy turned professional after competing in the 2015 Walker Cup. As a professional golfer, he competed in the Tour in the 2016 season. At the end of the season, he finished with 7 top 25 finishes which include 2 top 10s in 21 events. He remained on the Tour for the 2017 season and competed in 22 events. In the 2017 season, he finished with 9 top 25 finishes which include 4 top 10s.

McCarthy earned a PGA Tour card after he finished outside the top 25 in the regular season. He won the Tour Championship on September 23, 2018, over Lucas Glover. His other three wins include as an amateur at the Maryland Open in 2010, 2013, and 2015.
