Smush Parker is a former professional basketball player from New York. He initially gained recognition as the starting point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers. Parker scored at least 20 points in the first four games that led him to in the starting line-up for the Lakers. He has also played with the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, Guangdong Southern Tigers, and the Albany Patroons.

Parker was born on June 1, 1981, in Brooklyn, New York. His parents are Robin Royal Parker and William “Bill” Henry Parker II. Parker studied at Newtown High School where he was start guard. Then, he attended the College of Southern Idaho in the 1999-2000 season. Later, he was transferred to Fordham University to play college basketball. Smush entered the NBA in 2002 after his sophomore season at Fordham.

Parker’s NBA career began after the Cleveland Cavaliers signed him in the 2002-03 season. After that, he was signed with Green League’s Aris Thessaloniki. Parker helped the team to get victory at the 2004 Greek Basketball Cup against Olympiacos in the final game. In 2004, he returned to the NBA and then played for the Phoenix Suns and the Detroit Pistons. In the summer of 2005, he was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Parker was not known before he entered the 2005 season. However, after playing as a starting point guard for the Lakers, he started gaining recognition. He came as the surprise starter in the Los Angeles Lakers season opener against the Denver Nuggets. He later scored at least 20 points in 4 out of his 5 games. That eventually impressed the coach Phil Jackson and then he found a place in the starting line-up for the Lakers. Parker appeared in 162 straight games for two years from 2005 to 2007 where he made an average of 11.5 points. However, he lost his starting spot to the rookie, Jordan Farmar in the playoffs.

Smush had a clash with coaches and players while playing with the Lakers. He also had a feud with All-star Kobe Bryan. Parker admitted to ignoring Bryant and not giving him the ball. Bryant mentioned Parker as a bad teammate and said he shouldn’t have been in the NBA. On the other hand, Parker mentioned Kobe as a bad teammate. After the tragic death of Bryant in 2020, Parker confirmed that the two never reconciled their differences.

Parker was signed to the Miami Heat in July 2007. He made an average of 4.8 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists which was low compared to his 11.1 points with the Los Angeles Lakers. Parker was put on paid leave by the Lakers after he had a physical altercation with a parking attendant in November 2007. He was officially waived by the Miami Heat in March 2008. After that, he was signed by the Los Angeles Clippers for the rest of the season in March 2008. Parker was then signed by the Denver Nuggets. Nevertheless, he was released in October 2008.

Smush later played in the NBA Development League for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He was officially signed by the Chinese Basketball Association’s Guangdong Southern Tigers in January 2009. Later, he was signed by the Russian club, Spartak Saint Petersburg for a year. After that, he signed a contract with Iraklis Thessaloniki and Iranian Basketball Super League’s Petrochimi Bandar Ima. In December 2012, he played with the Adriatic Basketball Association’s Cibona Zagreb. However, he was released after playing only 5 games in Adriatic League.

Parker signed with his former team, Guaros de Lara in January 2014. Then, he played in The Basketball Tournament where his team reached the semi-finals. After that, he played in the Mongolian National Basketball Association’s Mon-Altius Madimos Falcons in February 2015. After two years, he signed with the North American Premier Basketball’s Albany Patroons.

In January 2023, the Bleacher Report reported that Parker is working towards a career as an NBA official. The ex-Los Angeles Lakers had previously shared pictures of himself at referee camp and working games in the independent pro league, The Basketball League (TBL).
