Early life and College Career

Diana Lorena Taurasi was born in Glendale, California on June 11, 1982. Her father, Mario was a professional soccer player in Italy, who played as a goalkeeper for several years. Diana’s mom, Liliana was originally from Argentina. Her parents emigrated to the United States when she was born. She grew up with an older sister, Jessika.

Diana received the 2000 Cheryl Miller Award while attending the Don Antonio Lugo High School. She was also named the best player in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times and was named the Parade Magazine National High School Player of the year in 2000.

Diana earned MVP honors and scored 12 points while playing in the 2000 WBCA High School All-America Game. She later attended the University of Connecticut, where she played for the women’s basketball team for the 2000-2001 season. Diana played as a shooting and point guard and led the team to get 3 consecutive NCAA championships.

After her collegiate career, she was selected first overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2004 WNBA Draft. She has played as a forward in many circumstances due to the lack of tall players in her team. Nevertheless, she plays as a guard and has been the best in the position.

Diana impressed all with her brilliant game in her WNBA debut where she scored 22 points against the Sacramento Monarchs. Despite her best effort, she failed to make her team qualify for the playoffs. However, she still shined for her individual contribution and was subsequently named to the Western Conference All-Star team.

Taurasi made the WNBA playoffs in 2007, where her team, the Mercury defeated the Seattle Storm in the first round. As Mercury was sweeping all the team, and getting the victory, she made a place in the WNBA finals for the first time. In the end, the Mercury won their first WNBA title, and after the win, she became the 7th player ever to lift a WNBA title, NCAA title, and an Olympic gold medal.

Taurasi announced in February 2015 that she would be sitting out the 2015 WNBA season, and in the following season, she returned to the Mercury, where she mage 17.8 ppg and helped her team to qualify for a playoff berth.

Diana signed and extended her contract with the Mercury for multi-year in May 2017. Next month, she made history by making 7000 points, 1500 assists, and 1500 rebounds against the Indiana Fever. With her effort, The Mercury was able to get through a second round, but they were eliminated in a 3 game sweep by the Los Angeles Sparks. Diana was on the injured list in the 2019 WNBA season after she had back surgery. Taurasi extended her contract for 2 years with Mercury in February 2021.
