Ed Reed is a former safety who was drafted in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. He holds an NFL record for the 2 longest interception returns and the all-time NFL record for interception return yards. During his prime, he was referred to as a ball hawk. Reed is set to become the next head football coach at Bethune-Cookman which was announced by the University on December 27.

Reed was born on September 11, 1978, in St. Rose, Louisiana. He grew up in Saint Rose in the middle-class suburbs of New Orleans. His mom, Karen raised him along with his four siblings. Similarly, his dad, Ed Sr. was a welder. Reed studied at Destrehan High School in Destrehan.

Ed Reed was an all-state selection as a kick returner and defensive back on the Fighting Wildcats football team. He was subsequently named the District Most Valuable Defensive Player by the New Orleans Times-Picayune. In his senior year, he deflected 12 passes and made 83 tackles with 7 interceptions. Ed was also a standout track athlete while studying at Destrehan High School.

Reed attended the University of Miami as a standout defensive back with an athletic scholarship. During his time at Miami University, he set several records and still holds the record for 21 career interceptions. Ed was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in January 2018. His professional career kicked off after he was picked by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He was signed by the Ravens for a five-year, $6.18 million contract in August 2002.

Reed played his first game for the Ravens at the Carolina Panthers, where he recorded 3 solo tackles. In 2002, he appeared as a rookie in all 16 games and also made a career-high 85 combined tackles. During the 2003 season, he was retained as the starting safety and started at the Pittsburgh Steelers as a Ravens season-opener. Reed appeared in his first career playoff game against the Tennessee Titans.

In January 2006, he signed a six-year $40 million contract extension deal with the Baltimore Ravens including a $15 million signing bonus. In 2006, he appeared in all 16 games and recorded 59 combined tackles. The following year, he was named the starting free safety to start the regular season by the head coach, Brian Billick. He became a free agent at the end of the 2012 season after his contract with Ravens expired.

In March 2013, he signed a 3-year contract worth $15 million including $5 million guaranteed with the Houston Texans. He played his first game for the Texans in September 2013 against the Baltimore Ravens. He lost his starting job in Week 9 as his playing time was reduced as the season progressed. Ed was released by the Texans in November 2013 after displaying limited production. He had no interceptions, no passes defended, and no forced fumbles in seven games.

Reed was then signed by the New York Jets in November 2013. For the Jets, he recorded his first interception against Oakland Raiders in the 2013 season. In May 201, he announced his retirement and officially retired on May 7, 2015.

Reed started his career journey as an assistant defensive coach of the Buffalo Bills in January 2016. However, he was not retained as an assistant coach after serving in the 2016 season. Reed was confirmed as the new head coach of Bethune-Cookman University’s Wildcats football team on December 27, 2022.
