Jadeveon Clowney played as a running back and defensive end for the high school’s junior varsity team. He became a permanent fixture at the defensive end by spring practice. Clowney played nearly the entire season with South Pointe’s high school team with a bone spur in his foot. In January 2009, he had surgery on the bone spur. Clowney was considered the best player in his class and was often considered a five-star recruit by major recruiting services such as Rivals.com, Scout.com, and ESPNU.

Clowney announced to join South Carolina on his eighteenth birthday during a live broadcast on ESPN. He played in all 12 games of the season as a true freshman. Jadeveon begins the season opener against East Carolina. In his first game, he had 7 tackles, a quarterback hurry, and a pass breakup. At the end of the season, he had 36 tackles and was ranked 8th in the SEC with 8.0 sacks.
