In the early stage of his fighting career, he lost to Russian boxer, Andrey Balanov, but later he won against American boxer, Boyd Melson. Similarly, he was able to defeat Olympic Champion, Bakhtiyar Artayev. Lara eventually won Gold after defeating Magomed Nurutdinov (BLR).

Lara competed in the welterweight boxing world cup in Russia in 2005. In the boxing tournament, he defeated three boxes and in the end, he lost to Andrey Balanov. Lara was defected at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games but made a second defection attempt. In the second attempt, he was successful and made his way to Germany. He fought Austin Trout in December 2013, and in the end, he retained his WBA interim super welterweight title via unanimous decision. Erislandy defended his WBA (Regular) super welterweight title in June 2015. Additionally, he won over Delvin Rodriguez for the vacant IBO title.

Lara returned to the ring on Saturday, May 28 to fight against the huge underdog, Spike O’Sullivan. He stopped Sullivan at the start of the eighth round. Before the end of the seven rounds, he hurt O’Sullivan badly with his left hand. At the beginning of the eighth round, he quickly pounced on him and hurt O’Sullivan again with another straight left hand. With that, he retained his secondary WBA middleweight title with 29-3-3, 17 KOs.
