Jeanette Lee is a professional pool player and one of the world’s top female billiards players from Brooklyn. Lee won a gold medal for the United States at the 2001 World Games in Japan. She won over 30 titles in total over the span of her pool career.

Lee was born on July 9, 1971, in Brooklyn, New York. She was born to Korean parents who immigrated to the United States before she came into this world. Her father is known to own a smoke shop in Manhattan. While her mom is known to be a registered nurse. Lee lived in a predominantly black community in Brooklyn, which was challenging for a Korean immigrant.

Jeanette studied at Bronx High School. However, she had to drop out of school after she was diagnosed with severe scoliosis at 12 years of age. Lee had to go through surgery to get relief from the pain and had two 18-inch Harrington rods implanted in her back.

Jeanette Lee struggled in her teenage years. She nearly lost her confidence after she looked for acceptance in every place that she could work. At a young age, she started strolling around the bars where she would drink, and smoke in a hope that she would be accepted. When she reached 18, she visited one of the poolhall in New York.

Lee was attracted to the pool after seeing an elderly guy’s game who was playing at New York’s pool hall. She finally consoled herself that the pool is the place where she could find peace and that would bring back her confidence. She was so fascinated by the guy’s pool game where it looked like he was making the pool balls dance as per their wishes. At that time, she decided that she would learn to play pool.

Jeanette took three years to get perfect at the pool. She started playing as a professional pool player in 1993. After a year and a half, she became the Number 1 pool player in the world. For the next three years from 1993 to 1996, she finished as runner-up at the World Nine-ball Championships in the women’s category. In 1998, she grabbed the Women’s Professional Billiard Association Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Lee also finished many top finishes while competing on the WPBA Tour. She represented the United States at the 2001 World Games in Akita, Japan, and won the gold medal. Subsequently, in 1999, she won the ladies’ US $25,000 winner-take-all Tournament of Champions. Lee again won the Tournament of Champions in 2003. She challenged Filipino pool player, Efren Reyes for a race-to-13 exhibition match in 2001. However, she lost the game to Reyes at nine-ball with the score of 4-13. She was ranked at fourth place in Pool & Billiard Magazine’s Fans’ Top 20 Favorite Players poll in 2007.

Jeanette Lee has been married to professional pool player, George Breedlove since 1996. Together, they are parenting four kids, a son, and 3 daughters. Jeanette didn’t believe earlier that she could ever have kids. At first, she fostered an adult son and then adopted a daughter. After that, she had a daughter through surrogacy. Less than a year of adoption, she became pregnant with another daughter.

Lee was diagnosed with stage 4 Ovarian cancer nearly two years back in early 2021. Ovarian cancer later started metastasizing to other parts of her body. She revealed that the doctors had told her that the cancer will never be in remission. Earlier this year, Lee shared an update on her cancer fight stating that she has found new hope. She briefly shared her story about her career and fight with cancer in an ESPN documentary, Jeanette Lee Vs that premiered on December 13.
