Early life

Oleksandr Usyk was born on the 17th of January, 1987 in Simferopol, Crimean Oblast. His parents were originally from northern Ukraine. His father worked in the military and passed through Afghanistan. While his mom worked in construction before moving to Simferopol to study. His parents met in Crimea where his dad was serving as a security guard.

Usyk grew up with two siblings. At a young age, he was trained at the SC Tavriya Simferopol and played association football. He graduated from the Lviv State University of Physical Culture in 2002. Oleksandr switched to boxing in 2002.

Usyk won his first three matches at the 2006 European Championships. He reached the semi-final and lost to Matvey Korobov. Then, he moved to light-heavyweight and came out as the winner of the Strandja Cup in 2008. That same year in February, he moved up to another weight class. Then, he was sent to the Teramo’s province, Roseto Degli Abruzzi for the Olympic Qualifier.

Oleksandr showed his best performance in the qualifier and defeated world-class, Daniel Price and Azeri Elchin Alizade. After that, he competed at the 2008 Olympic games and outpointed Yushan Nijiati and Clemente Russo. Then, he competed at the 2008 European Championships in light-heavyweight. There, he won gold and moved back up to heavyweight.

Usyk turned professional in 2013 and made his debut in November 2013 against Mexican fighter, Felipe Romero. He was able to defeat Romero in a fifth-round knockout. In October 2014, he won his first title by defeating South African boxer, Daniel Bruwer. In June 2016, he announced that he would be challenging undefeated Polish boxer, Krzysztof Glowacki for the WBO cruiserweight title. The fight between the two was broadcasted live on Sky Sports in the UK.

Usyk declared that he would move up to heavyweight after he defeats Tony Bellow. He also announced Carlos Takam as his next opponent and also scheduled a fight on May 25, 2019. Usyk then announced his heavyweight debut match on October 12, 2019, which would be taking place in September against Tyrone Spong. However, later Spong was replaced by Chazz Witherspoon. Usyk defeated Witherspoon after round 7.  He defeated Anthony Joshua in September 2021 and became the unified world heavyweight champion.

In June 2022, the official announcement was made that Usky would be facing Anthony Joshua for a rematch in Jeddah, Saudrian Arabia on August 20. Joshua would be giving his best to become a three-time world heavyweight champion, while Usyk would be marking the first defense of his world heavyweight titles. The victory in a match could set Usyk on becoming an undisputed champion. He could also possibly meet with Tyson Fury.

Oleksandr Usyk is married to his wife, Yekaterina. Together, the pair shares three kids. His better half, Yekaterina has Russian citizenship. Usyk also uses Russian as his first language. However, he declared after the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in April 2014 that he would never be exchanging his Ukrainian citizenship for Russian citizenship.

Usyk urged Russian President, Putin, to stop Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 26, 2022. He also traveled to Ukraine later to join Ukraine’s territorial defense forces. However, he left Ukraine in late March to train for his rematch with Joshua.
