Early life

Jenni Rivera was born on July 2, 1969, in Long Beach, California to parents, Pedro and Rosa Saavedra. She was raised by her parents alongside four brothers and a sister. Until her sophomore year, she earned A’s in school. At 15 years of age, she became pregnant with her first child due to which she worked at flea markets selling CDs.

Rivera later continued her education by getting GED and graduating as class valedictorian. She also joined Long Beach City College, from where she received a degree in business administration.

Rivera started her career working for some time in real estate. However, later she went to work on her father’s label, Cintas Acuario, which was founded in 1987. The record label has in fact launched the career of famous Mexican singer, Chalino Sanchez. She recorded her first song in 1992 dedicating to her dad on Father’s Day. Afterward, she was signed to Capitol/EMI’s Latin division. Rivera came up with her debut album “Somos Rivera (We Are Rivera)” in 1992.

However, it was not easy for her to get work in the music industry as it was primarily dominated by men. She faced a lot of issues on being a female who was trying to crack the regional Mexican genre. Despite all the issues, she independently released many albums titled “La Maestra”, “Por Un Amor”, “Poco a Poco”, and “Adios a Selena”.

In 1993, she was signed to Balboa Records. She dropped her first commercial album after getting signed to Fonovisa Records in 1990, which was titled “Que Me Entierren Con la Banda”. Rivera received her first Latin Grammy nomination in 2001 for her songs “Se las Voy a Dar an Otro” and “Dejate Amar”.

Rivera obtained substantial success after her record “Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida” was released in 2005. The record was certified double platinum and charted at No. 10 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart.

She continued to get more recognition after her ninth major studio album “Mi Vida Loca” peaked at No. 1 on the Regional Mexican albums chart. Jenni recorded her first-ever full mariachi studio album “La Gran Senora” in 2009, which received a Latin Grammy nomination for the Best Ranchero Album.

Rivera sold 20 million albums all over the place by early 2013. Her compilation album “La Misma Gran Senora” was released by Fonovisa Records just two days after her death on December 11, 2012. The album became a massive hit that peaked at No. 1 on Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart and Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart.

In addition to singing, she has also acted in a movie titled “Filly Brown” which was released on April 19, 2013. In July 2014, she released a live album “1969-Siempre, En Vivo Desde Monterrey, Parte 2”, which was sold over 10,000 in the week. 

Personal Life

Jenni River experienced marriage life three times and had five children. She was first married to Jose Trinidad Marin, with whom she had three kids. Rivera cited the physical and emotional abuse to end her marriage with Marin in 1992. Marin was sentenced to over 31 years in prison without parole after he was convicted of sexual assault in April 2006.

Rivera then married Juan Lopez in 1997 and had two kids with him. Her second husband, Lopez died in 2009 after suffering from complications of pneumonia while he was in prison. In 2010, she married retired baseball pitcher, Esteban Loaiza. They filed for divorce in 2012, but their divorce was never finalized. Rivera left the world on December 9, 2012, after she had an aircraft accident. She was buried at All Souls Cemetery on December 31, 2012.
