Early life

Joe Manchin was born on August 24, 1947, in Farmington, West Virginia. He was raised by his parents, John Manchin and Mary O. along with four siblings. His father who was of Italian descent owned a carpet and furniture store. Joe’s father and grandfather, both have served as the mayor of Farmington. 

Manchin completed his high school graduation from Farmington High School in 1965. Then, he attended West Virginia University by earning a football scholarship. He suffered an injury during football practice which put an end to his football career.

In 1970, he received a graduate degree in Business Administration from West Virginia, and then he started helping his dad with the family business.

Before becoming a full-time politician, he founded and ran the coal brokerage firm, Enersystems. In 2000, he handed over the control of the company to his son after being elected as the West Virginia secretary of state.

At 35 years of age, he was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates. In 1986, he was elected to the West Virginia Senate and worked at the position until 1996. Then, he ran for governor of West Virginia. Unfortunately, he lost the primary election to Charlotte Pritt. In 2000, he was made a Secretary of State of West Virginia.

Joe won the general election to be the West Virginia governor in 2004 where he defeated Democratic Bob Wise with a large margin. Since 1964 it was the first time where the Governor was succeeded by the same party. In the 2008 governor election, he easily won reelection capturing 69.77% of the vote.

In June 2010, he defeated Republican, John Raese in the general election receiving 54% of the vote. A couple of years later, he ran for reelection to a full term, and in the end, he got the victory over Raese and Bob Henry Baber capturing 61% of the vote.

Manchin ran for reelection in 2018 after he was challenged by Democratic Paula Jean Swearengin. He won the primary election receiving 70% of the vote. Then he was challenged by Patrick Morrisey and on November 6, he won the general election where he defeated Morrisey with a vote margin of 49.57% to 46.26%.

On November 15, 2010, he was sworn into the U. S. Senate first time by then-Vice President, Joe Biden. In December 2021, he was voted with Joe Biden’s position 97.4% of the time. 

Since December 2021, he was not willing to vote for the Build Back Better Act. Joe claimed the main reason for not supporting the act were the national debt, growing inflation, and the Omnicron variant. On Tuesday, January 18, 2022, he received a left-out footnote from his childhood friend and Alabama Coach, Nick Saban, where he was mentioned to support the Freedom to Vote Act. 

Manchin is one of the two Democratic Senators, who is not supporting the change in filibuster rules The letter was forwarded to Manchin urging the passage of the legislation to change filibuster rules in order to overcome Republican opposition.
