Kyrsten’s full name is Kyrsten Lea Sinema and she was born in Tucson, Arizona on July 12, 1976, to her parents, Dan and Marilyn (Wiley) Sinema. She grew up with her two siblings; an elder brother and a younger sister. Kyrsten was just a kid when her parents separated with a divorce. She was then raised by her mom and stepfather. Kyrsten lived for 3 years in an abandoned gas station after her stepfather lost his job.

Despite her troublesome childhood, she was able to continue her study. She completed her high school graduation from Walton High School when she was 16. In 1995, she earned her B. A. degree from Brigham Young University (BYU). Kyrsten later got herself involved as a social worker and during that time, she earned a Master of Social Work degree from Arizona State University.

She further continued her study and received a J. D. degree from the Arizona State University College of Law in 2004. Kyrsten received a Ph. D. in justice studies in 2012.

Kyrsten had initially worked as an adjunct professional at the Arizona State University School of Social Work, and Arizona Summit Law School. In 2004, she started her political career by getting into the Arizona Green Party. She was a local spokesperson in the Green Party, where she worked to repeal the death penalty, and organized antiwar protests. In 2004, she joined the Democratic Party, and the same year, she won 2 seats for Arizona’s 15th district receiving 37% of the vote.

Kyrsten defeated Republican Bob Thomas and was elected to the Arizona Senate in 2010. Following a year in June 2011, she shared that she would be running for the U. S. House of Representatives in 2012. At the start of 2012, she announced her bid for Congress in the 9th congressional district.

In August 2012, she won a 3-way Democratic primary receiving nearly 42% of the vote. Four years later, she defeated the Republican nominee, Dave Giles and won the general election receiving 61% of the vote.

In September 2017, she announced her candidacy for the Class I United States Senate. On January 3, 2019, she was sworn in with the 116th U. S. Congress, and with that, she became the first woman to present Arizona in the U. S. Senate.

As a U. S. Senator, Sinema is known for her progressive advocacy, whether it is opposing the war on terror or supporting good causes like LGBT rights. She also urged her Senate colleagues to support and vote for the proposed January 6 Commission so that they continue the investigation on the storming of the U. S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
