Mac McClung was signed up for a local youth league after he was exposed to basketball before he entered the seventh grade. He started as a sophomore while playing basketball at Gate City High school. Mac scored a career-high 64 points at the VHSL against Dan River High School on February 24, 2017.

Mac committed to play for Rutgers in college in the summer. He played his first game as a senior on December 12. He led his team to victory by scoring 47 points in a 96-43 win against Lee High School. After that, he scored 44 points over Fern Creek High School.

McClung ended his high school career scoring 47 points in a winning game against Staunton’s Robert E. Lee High. He finished the season being named Southwest Virginia Player of the year. Then, he competed at the Ballisflie All-American Game and won the slam dunk contest.

Mac then played for Georgetown and scored a freshman season-high 38 points on December 22, 2018. He declared for the 2020 NBA draft after the end of the season. However, he withdrew from the draft and entered the NCAA transfer Portal on May 13. Afterward, he transferred to Texas Tech and scored 20 points over Northwestern State in his debut game for Texas on November 25.

McClung went undrafted in the 2021 NBA draft and then joined the 2021 NBA Summer League with the Los Angeles Lakers. He signed with the team on August 10 and was waived on October 13. After that, he played in the NBA G League with the South Bay Lakers.

On November 5, 2021, he debuted with South Bay and scored game-high 24 points over the NBA G League Ignite. Then, he signed a 10-day contract with the Chicago Bulls on December 22, 2021. After his contract expired with the Bulls, he was reacquired by the South Bay Lakers on January 11, 2022.

In April 2022, he signed a two-way contract deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. However, he became an unrestricted free agent after declining his $1.62 million qualifying offer.  After that, he joined the 2022 NBA Summer League and played for the California Classic. In July 2022, he signed a non-guaranteed one-year contract with the Golden State Warriors.

McClung then signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Philadelphia 76ers on October 9, 2022. However, he was waived by the 76ers just after a day. After that, he joined the Delaware Blue Coats and played in the NBA G League. He subsequently accepted to compete in the 2023 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

Mac signed a two-way contract with the 76ers on February 14, 2023, and won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest on February 18. In the NBA All-Star Game, he scored a perfect 50 scores. He was crowned NBA Slam Dunk Champion in Salt Lake City after that.
