Early Life
Rina Sawayama was born in August 1990, in Japan. Not much is unveiled regarding her upbringing, early life, and parents. As per the reports, she spent the first five years of her early life in Niigata. When she was five, she along with her family members shifted to London, England.
Sawayama’s family chose to stay in London despite they had an original plan to move back to Japan when she turned 10. During her childhood, she struggled to understand her peers and teachers as she was not very good at English. Rina eventually got connected with her close ones through pop music. She started posting music covers on Myspace at 16 years of age.

Sawayama formed a hip hop group, Lazy Lion during the final two years of secondary education. She studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and holds a degree in political science from the University.
In February 2013, she came up with the song, Sleeping In Walking and started her solo career. Later, she released a 7-inch vinyl of the song, Who? as the B-side through UK label, Make Mine. After that, she dropped the song Terror using the stage name, Riina. Then, she released a music video to her track, Tunnel Vision in June 2015. Following a year, she dropped the song, Where U Are.
Sawayama kept on releasing new songs and her new single, Cyber Stockholm Syndrome premiered on The Fader in March 2017. That same year, she released the songs, Afterlife and Tunnel Vision with singer/songwriter, Shamir. On October 27, she came up with her first EP, Rina. She revealed on Twitter that she spent 2 to 3 years to save money to drop the EP.
Sawayama came up with the track, Cherry in August 2018, which explores her sexual identity. In late 2018, she embarked on her Ordinary Superstar Tour across the countries such as Canada, the US, and the UK. She was signed to Dirty Hit records in 2020 and after that, she dropped the song STFU! And Comme des Garcons (Like the Boys”. On April 17, she released her first album, Sawayama which received widespread critical acclaim.
Sawayama performed the song, XS on the late-night talk show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 26, 2020. With that, she made her TV debut. Just after a month, she came up with her new single, Lucid. Then, she released a deluxe version of Sawayama on December 4, 2020. Sawayama dropped an updated version of her single, Chosen Family in April 2021.
Other than working on her own songs, she appeared on Gaga’s remix album, Dawn of Chromatica in September 2021. That same year, she started working on her second studio album. In support of her debut studio album, she ventured into the first leg of her Dynasty Tour in November 2021. On November 17, she gave a performance on her new song, Catch Me in the Air, from her second album.
In January 2022, she was featured on the song, Bef for You. On May 16, she announced that her second album, Hold the Girl would be released on September 16, 2022. The lead song, This Hell was released on May 18. After that, the title track from the album, Hold the Girl was released as the third song.
