Early Life & Amateur Career
Delonte West was born on the 26th of July, 1983 in Washington, D. C. He was raised by his parents, Dmitri West and Delphina Addison. Delonte grew up with two siblings; Dmitri West Jr. And Danielle West. He studied at the Eleanor Roosevelt High School where he was an excellent basketball player. There, he teamed up with future NBA star, Eddie Basden.
While playing for the high school team, he led them to their first state tournament appearance. Delonte scored 22 points and had 8 rebounds while the Roosevelt Raiders made it to the Maryland 4A Championship. However, Roosevelt lost the game 70-58. West had made an average of 20.2 points, 3.9 assists, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.1 steals in each game. His outstanding performance led him to earn the title of the Washington Post All-Met Basketball Player of the year.
Following high school, he attended Saint Joseph’s University. He averaged 18.9 points and made 6.7 assists in each game as a junior player at Saint Joseph. Due to his excellent play, the Saint Joseph’s Univerity team went 27-0 in the regular season.

Delonte decided to leave St Joseph after he finished his junior campaign. He was picked in the 2004 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics. In the first season, he played only 39 games due to his injuries. Delonte was transitioned to point guard in his rookie season. At the beginning of the 2005-06 season, he was named the starting point guard by head coach Doc Rivers. In the 2005-06 season, he performed well with an average of 11.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. Subsequently, he represented the Celtics on the sophomore team in February 2006 for the Rookie Challenge at NBA All-Star Weekend.
West started playing as the shooting guard spot in the 2006-07 season. After he showed signs of difficulty, he was moved back to the point guard. In November 2006, he had some clutch shots against the Charlotte Bobcats. In June 2007, he was traded to Seattle SuperSonics. Then in February 2008, he was a part of 3 teams that were traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played in 26 regular season games as a Cavalier.
In September 2008, he signed a 3-year contract deal with the Cavaliers worth $12.7 million. In the team, he played in a shooting guard position in the starting season. During the regular season games, he won a franchise record and league-best 66 games as a starter for the Cavaliers. Delonte set a career-high with 8 steals against the Miami Heat in March 2009.
West was traded back to the Celtics in 2010 along with Sebastian Telfair. He signed a 1-year contract as a point guard with the Boston Celtics on September 1, 2010. However, he was suspended for the first 10 games of the 2010-11 season after he pleaded guilty to weapon charges in Maryland. In December 2011, he was signed to the Dallas Mavericks and averaged 9.6 points in each game during the 2011-12 season.
Delonte was acquired by the NBA D-League’s Texas Legends on January 25, 2013. He played his first game for the Legends in March 2013 against the Santa Cruz Warriors. Then, he was signed to the Chinese basketball team, Fujian Xunxing in October 2013. West returned to China for a second stint after being signed by the Shanghai Sharks for one year in September 2014. He was then acquired by the Texas Legends in March 2012. Just nearly after a month, the Legends waived him due to a season-ending injury.

Delonte West has been married twice. There is not much detail available about his first marriage which ended in divorce in 2010. Then, he tied the knot with Caressa Madden in 2013. He is parenting two sons with his second wife, Carresa. In the past, he dated the mother of LeBron James, Gloria James. He broke up with Gloria in 2010.
West suffered from bipolar disorder in 2008. However, he later disputed the diagnosis suggesting that the difficulties arose due to the combination of temporary depression and his stress as a basketball player. He was captured panhandling at an intersection in Dallas on September 28, 2020. Then, the Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban paid for his drug rehabilitation treatment. Cuban also provided him with a hotel room to stay in.
