Early Life

Kendra Scott was born on March 27, 1974, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Her biological father’s name is Kenneth. Though she was raised by her stepfather and mother. She lost her stepfather, Rob, due to cancer. After losing her stepfather, she was inspired to raise cancer awareness with the help of cancer research foundations.

Kendra and her family shifted their place to Houston when she was 16. Following high school graduation, she fell in love with a boy whom she followed to Texas A&M University.

Scott studied in Texas for a year before dropping out. Then, she moved to Austin, Texas, where started her first business named the Hat Box. In her start-up, she focused on making comfortable hats for women who were going through chemotherapy.

Kendra was able to generate some profit by selling comfortable and stylish hats. She also donated a certain amount from her savings to cancer research. Kendra had started making jewelry from her house in Austin, Texas. In 2002, she founded the Kendra Scott LLC, where she designed her first collection in her house bedroom. She designed her first collection for just $500.

During the struggling days, she walked from one store to another store around the capital city of Texas, Austin to sell her product. Kendra eventually sold all her samples at the last boutique for which she need to purchase enough materials to fulfill the orders that she received on the first day. She slowly started getting success and by reaching 2005, her design was featured on the runway show of Oscar de la Renta 2006. In addition, her designs were also featured on Randolph Duke’s 2007 runway show.

Kendra received a big order from the luxury department store, Nordstrom during the financial crisis of 2007-2008. Upon receiving an order, she was saved from closing her company. Then in 2010, she opened her first retail store on Austin’s South Congress Avenue. That same year, she started her e-commerce business and also launched the brand’s Color Bar experience.

Scott followed up her success journey by opening the second store on Rodeo Drive in 2011. After 3 years, she started different stores around the areas of the South and Midwest. In 2016, the private equity firm, Berkshire Partners purchased a minority stake in her company at a valuation of $1 billion. Kendra had 102 retail stores at the end of the year 2019. Her products are currently distributed and sold in more than 1000 specialty boutiques all over the world.

Kendra stepped down as the CEO of the company in February 2021. Nonetheless, she is still associated with the company as the Executive Chairwoman. In addition to her fashion ventures, she also supports women’s and children’s causes. Kendra launched the Kendra Cares Program in 2015. She made a donation of $1 million to the University of Texas in 2019.

Kendra Scott has been married twice. Scott was 26 when she married her first husband, John Scott on June 24, 2000. She has two sons named Cade and Beck from her first marriage. Scott legally separated from John on August 22, 2006. Then she found her new love who was the Austin native, Matt Davis. She exchanged the wedding vows for the second time on June 6, 2014.

Scott’s wedding to Matt was an intimate royal wedding that took place in Sedona, Arizona. She has a son with Matt named Grey. Her second marriage turned out a failure as she parted ways with her second husband Matt through a divorce in September 2020.
