Allen went to give an audition for the 8th season of American Idol along with his younger brother, Daniel. After he was selected and moved to the next rounds, he was given the least amount of screen time.

During his performances, he was able to impress the judges and audiences by playing several musical instruments such as the electric guitar, the acoustic guitar, the piano, and the keyboard. Kris performed his own arrangement of the song Ain’t No Sunshine on a keyboard in the finals. The performance received praise from the judges. Simon Cowell even commented on him saying the performance was his best so far.

Allen was announced as the winner of the 8th season of American Idol on May 20, 2009. He became the first married contestant after winning the title. During the finale, around 100 million votes were showered for the final contestants.
