Rob Minkoff was born in August 1962 in Palo Alto, California. He was born to Jack Robert and Tola Fay Minkoff (nee Stebel). Rob attended Palo Alto High School. In the early 1980s, he received a graduate degree from the California Institute of the Arts.

In 1983, Minkoff was appointed by the Walt Disney Animation Studios as an in-between artist for the animated dark fantasy movie “The Black Cauldron”. At that time, he was excelling in his career through CalArts. Following that, he worked as a supervising animator in the animated adventure mystery movie “The Great Mouse Detective”. In 1987, he worked as a character designer in the animated musical movie “The Brave Little Toaster”. Then in 1988, he wrote the song, Good Company for the movie “Oliver & Company”.

Rob continued to work in the animation world and was selected to work as a character animator for “The Little Mermaid”, which was released in 1989. Afterward, he worked as a director of two Roger Rabbit shorts titled “Tummy Trouble” and “Roller Coaster Rabbit”. In 1991, he worked in pre-production script development. After a year, he directed a Mickey Mouse short.

Minkoff’s breakthrough work came in 1994 when he got the opportunity to work as the director of Walt Disney Animation’s The Lion King. He directed the movie alongside Roger Allers. He further excelled after directing his first-ever live-action movies “Stuart Little” and “Stuart Little 2”. In 2003, he directed the fully live-action movie “The Haunted Mansion”. Afterward, he directed The Forbidden Kingdom in 2008 and the movie titled “Flypaper” in 2011.

Rob made his participated in a local New York City film festival as a jury member for the NYICFF. The film festival was dedicated to screening movies for kids between the ages of 3 and 18. In 2014, he worked as a director of DreamWorks Animation’s computer-animated movie “Mr. Peabody & Sherman”. In 2018, he directed the animated Netflix original series of the late author of children’s books, Anna Dewdney’s picture book franchise, Llama Llama. During that time, he also looked after all aspects of production.

Apart from directing the movies, he produced the animated martial arts comedy movie “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank”. The movie was originally titled Blazing Samurai, which took a few years to develop. The movie is scheduled to release on July 15, 2022. Rob is also the co-director of the movie. He has likewise made a cameo appearance on Season 11 and 12 of Bravo’s reality series “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”.
