Alan Smolinisky was born on November 28, 1979, in Los Angeles, California. His father’s name is Mario and was born in Argentina in 1945. His dad was poor and Jewish. Alan stated that the people from Argentina were not so good to his father as Jews were treated as second-class citizens.

Alan’s dad decided to leave Argentina and moved to Los Angeles, where his Uncle Samuel lived. His dad arrived in Los Angeles with four dollars in his pocket in October 1963. Mario was not formally educated and didn’t know a single word of English. Later his mom separately emigrated from Argentina with her family. His parents worked hard and invested their savings to start a garment business. Through the garment business, they hired and mentor new immigrants.

Smolinisky started his career in the late 1990s working in the commercial real estate business. He started working in real estate while he was still studying at the University of Southern California. After some time, he and his then landlord, Brian Chen started the company, Conquest Student Housing. Through the company, they built and renovated many properties around the USC campus. The company was later sued by the University for monopolizing the student housing market at the University Park Campus of USC.

Alan and his partner eventually sold their company to a private equity firm for $205 million in the Summer of 2008. Afterward, they decided to focus on public securities investment. Alan and his business partner, Chen currently manage their own personal capital from Pacific Palisades. They have mainly invested in commercial real estate in a large apartment portfolio in Southern California. In 2019, he purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers. Smolinisky and Nike founder, Phil Knight put an offer of $2 billion to purchase the Portland Trail Blazers in June 2022. However, the Blazer’s team has released a statement stating that the team is not for sale. Despite that, Smolinisky and Knight are still continuing their effort to purchase the franchise. The Blazers are owned by the Paul Allen Trust, and if Alan and Phil continue to offer them more prices then the trust would have no choice but to sell the team in the future.
