Brittney Griner is an American professional basketball player. She is best known for playing in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) for the American professional basketball team, the Phoenix Mercury. Griner is the two-time Olympic gold medalist and has received an NCAA championship and a WNBA championship

Brittney Griner was born on the 18th of October, 1990 in Houston, Texas. She was raised by her parents Raymond and Sandra Griner. Her father is a Vietnam War veteran who has served as a Harris County sheriff. Griner grew up with three older siblings.

Brittney studied at the Nimitz High School. Throughout high school, she played basketball and varsity volleyball. She practiced with the boys’ basketball team in her sophomore year. In her senior year, she led her high school team’s basketball team to the Texas 5A girls basketball state championship game.

Griner continued to play basketball at Baylor University. She blocked 223 shots as a freshman, which is the all-time single-season record. Griner became the 7th player and the second woman to dunk twice during a women’s college basketball game in January 2010. She entered the NCAA Tournament as a fourth seed. In March, she set an NCAA tournament record with fourteen blocked shots against the Georgetown Hoyas.

Brittney ended her college career after the 2013 NCAA women’s basketball tournament. She was selected as the first overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2013 WNBA Draft. In her rookie season, she has been named a WNBA all-star. She equaled the WNBA dunk record in her debut against Chicago Sky in May 2013. Due to a right knee injury, she missed the 2013 WNBA All-Star game and was subsequently replaced by Tina Thompson.

Brittney had a historic 2014 season for the Mercury as the team had a dominant Big 3, Diana Taurasi, Candice Dupree, and herself. The Mercury eventually set the WNBA record for the most victories in the regular season. Griner then had the most prolific defensive season in WNBA history in the 2015 season. She even set a WNBA playoff record with 11 blocks. After he rookie contract expired, she re-signed with the Mercury on March 12, 2017.

After she pleaded guilty to the disorderly conduct charges, both Griner and Johnson were suspended by the WNBA for seven games in May 2015.

Griner gave birth to twin girls in October 2015. She officially separated from Johnson in June 2016. Then, she became engaged to Charlie Watson in August 2018. Griner and Charelle got wed in June 2019. Subsequently, after their marriage, Charelle changed her name to Charelle Griner.

Brittney was arrested on drug charges in Russia in February 2022. The Federal Security Service of Russia caught her with vaporizer cartridges containing hashish oil at Sheremetyevo International Airport. On June 27 closed-door hearing, a Khimki court scheduled her trial to start on July 1.
