Early life and Amateur Career

Patrick Cantlay was born on March 17, 1992, in Long Beach, California. He was born to parents, Steve and Colleen Neylan Cantlay. Patrick grew up with a sister named Caroline Cantlay, and two brothers, Jack and Nick. He studied at Servite High School. As a senior player in high school, he got the victory at the California State High School championship.

Cantlay then attended UCLA, where he won four tournaments. He was also named the most outstanding college golfer and received the Haskins Award in 2011. Likewise, he was named the GCAA National Freshman of the Year and received the Phil Mickelson Award. At the end of the 2011 season, he won the Mark H. McCormack Medal. After being honored as the world’s top-ranked amateur, he was invited to the 2012 Open Championship. Before that, through sectional qualifying, he made it through the 2011 U. S. Open.

On June 24, Patrick shot the lowest course record 60 in PGA Tour history by an amateur at the Travelers Championship. After a week, he finished a tie for 20th place at the AT&T National. In August, he competed at the North Shore Country Club and the Erin Hills, however, he lost at both events. Since he made it into the final of the U. S. Amateur, he was able to earn a spot in the 2012 Masters Tournament. Patrick became No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking on March 23, 2011, which he held for 55 weeks.

Patrick made a decision to give up the final two years of college in June 2012 to begin his professional journey. He made his professional debut at the 2012 Travelers Championship. Patrick then competed at AT&T National where he finished in a tie for 66th. He got his first professional victory at the 2013 Colombia Championship. Patrick suffered a back injury in the 2013-14 season, due to which, he was granted a medical extension for 11 events. He didn’t play and competed at a single event in 2015 and 2016.

Cantlay earned his PGA Tour card back in the second start of the 2017 season. Then, he competed at various Championship events to qualify for the Tour Championship. On November 5, 2017, he was able to win his first PGA Tour title while competing at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. In November 2018, he couldn’t defend his title at the Shriners Hospitals. He lost the title to Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke. Following a year in 2019, he played at the PGA Championship, where he finished tied for 3rd place.

Patrick’s next professional victory came at the Memorial Tournament. After winning the PGA Tour, he made a place in the world’s top 10 for the first time. In October 2019, he competed to regain his title at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. However, he lost on the second playoff hole to Kevin Na. Then he played as a part of the U. S. team at the 2019 Presidents Cup. The U. S. team got the victory at the golf competition with a score of 16-14, and his individual single match score over Joaquin Niemann was 3-2-0.

Patrick added another professional tour victory to his name in October 2020 by winning the Zozo Championship. In January 2021, he made the halfway cut and fired 20 birdies over the weekend at The American Express. In June, he grabbed the title of the Memorial Tournament for a second time by beating Collin Morikawa in a playoff. After that, he won a sudden-death playoff against Bryson DeChambeau at the BMW Championship.

Cantlay has been voted the PGA Tour Player of the Year after winning the Tour Championship in September 2021 and the FedEx Cup. In September 2021, he again played as a part of the U. S. team in the 2021 Ryder Cup, where his national team registered a victory with the score of 19-9 and he went 3-0-1 on his Sunday singles match over Shane Lowry.
