Gwen Shamblin was an author from Tennessee. She was the subject of the 2021 HBO Max docuseries titled “The Way Down God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin”. Gwen became popular through a Christian diet program, Weigh Down Workshop. She died along with her husband and five other Remnant leaders in a plane crash in May 2021.
Gwen Shamblin was born on February 18, 1955, in Memphis, Tennessee. She was born to Walter Henley, who was a doctor. Shamblin followed in her father’s footsteps and showed interest in the medical field. She eventually became a dietitian.
Shamblin grew up in an extremely religious household where her family members followed the Church of Christ. She had to follow the strict rules as instructed by her protestant church. Regarding her education, she studied at the University of Tennessee and earned an undergraduate degree in dietetics.

Gwen Shamblin initially served as a registered dietitian consultant at Memphis State University for five years. Then, she worked in the Tennessee Department of Health for 5 years. She started a weight control consulting practice in 1980.
Shamblin had struggled with her weight while she was in college. In 1986, she founded a weight loss program, the Weigh Down Workshop. However, some experts showed concern about the program alleging that it eliminated food selection guidance as recommended by the American Dietetic Association.
Shamblin had also developed a diet program, Weigh Down Workshop while working on her Master’s degree at Memphis State. In the 1990s, she hosted the diet program at Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis. The diet program consisted of 12-week seminars which were guided by audio tapes and videos featuring Shamblin.
By reaching 1994, the diet program was offered in 35 U. S. States in around 600 churches. The following year, the program reached 49 states at over 1000 churches in Canada and Great Britain. The Weigh Down Workshop also hosted over 21,000 classes with over 250,000 participants in the world by August 1998.
In 1999, she founded the Remnant Fellowship Church in Franklin. The church’s construction was finally completed in 2004 over 40 acres of land purchased by Shamblin in Brentwood. Shamblin later published a book, The Weigh Down Diet.
Through her book, Shamblin advised readers to avoid overeating by using spirituality. Eventually, the book sold over 1.2 million copies. After that, she published two other books, Rise Above in 2000 and Exodus Devotional in 2002. Shamblin has also been featured on various TV programs such as Secret Lives of Women and The Insider.
In 2021, she was featured in the five-part HBO docuseries, The Way Down God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin. The docuseries explores some of the accusations made against her and Remnant Fellowship Church over the years. Shamblin’s adherents, Joseph and Sonya Smith were convicted in the death of their eight-year-old son, Josef Smith.
The couple were both sentenced to 30 years of life in prison. Subsequently, the case prompted authorities to raid the family’s church that supported corporal punishment. As per the report, the members of the Remnant Church which was led by Gwen paid for the defense of the Smiths.

Gwen Shamblin was married twice. She was first married to David Shamblin in 1978 with whom she has two kids. Shamblin divorced David in 2018 and married actor, Joe Lara. Gwen was living with Joe and her kids in a historic mansion, Ashlawn in Brentwood.
Shamblin passed away on May 29, 2021, along with her husband and six church leaders. She was reportedly flying in her 1982 Cessna Citation 501 private jet for Palm Beach Florida when the jet crashed into Percy Priest Lake shortly after it took off.
