Suncoast, Sun City & Montecasino: SA's Big Casinos vs Playing Online (2026)

R10 buys a spin of the roulette wheel on the main floor at both Suncoast and Sun City, and R51 by BetterEFT opens an online account at Springbok. Those two numbers frame the choice better than any argument about which is “better”. We compared three of the country’s best-known casino resorts with an evening of online play, using each venue’s own website, checked on 5 October 2026.

The four options in numbers

Suncoast and Montecasino are run by Tsogo Sun, Sun City by Sun International. Figures come from each venue’s own pages and can change, so check before you travel.

Suncoast, Durban

Best for: a night out on the Golden Mile.

Suncoast runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The floor holds more than 1,370 slot machines in denominations from 1c to R10, with 61 tables for roulette, poker, blackjack and baccarat. Roulette starts at R10 and blackjack at R50 on the main floor and in the smoking casino.

High rollers head upstairs to the Salon Privé, which looks out over the Indian Ocean. Off the floor there are more than 20 restaurants, the CineCentre, a spa and the 7km promenade outside. The Jackpot Jar promotion runs from October 2026 to January 2027.

Sun City, North West

Best for: a weekend away with the family.

Sun City opened in 1979 as South Africa’s first land-based casino. Slots run from 1c on the main floor to R100 in the Salon Privé. American roulette starts at R10, blackjack at R100 and baccarat at R500, with Privé limits up to R200,000 on baccarat.

The slots are open 07h00 to 02h00 from Sunday to Wednesday and 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays, and the Privé never closes. New to tables? The “Learn to Play” series walks you through the games first.

Plan the trip, though. Resort access is for hotel guests, Sun MVG members, golfers with bookings and day visitors with a Valley of Waves ticket bought in advance from TicketPro, from R395 per adult. The Millionaire Maker promotion offers a shot at R1 million until 28 November 2026.

Montecasino, Fourways

Best for: dinner and a show in Joburg.

Montecasino’s floor has more than 1,400 slot machines from 1c to R100 and over 80 tables, with craps, American roulette, blackjack, baccarat and poker. The main floor is open 24 hours and tables open at 07h00 daily. The Salon Privé runs 25 tables from R100 to R10,000.

It’s also home to the world’s first Roulette Xtra on a Blaze table, where random multipliers pay between 50 to 1 and 300 to 1. Between sessions there’s Teatro, the Pieter Toerien theatre, four hotels and the Bird Gardens, home to more than 60 bird species.

Playing online from home

Best for: a weeknight on the couch. Verified in October 2026.

The Springbok online casino keeps its own guide to seven South African resorts, and it makes the case for both: a full night out on one side, play from home with a free option on the other. Online, there’s no drive and no dress code. More than 300 games run in your browser, with about 150 on mobile and no app to install.

The table lineup is close to a resort floor: eight blackjack versions, American and European roulette, baccarat, craps and video poker. Everything is in rand. What R500 looks like on each side

At Suncoast’s R10 roulette minimum, R500 covers 50 spins of the wheel. At Sun City, it’s five hands of blackjack at the R100 minimum, before the day ticket.

Online, R500 with the first welcome coupon becomes a R1,000 balance. The playthrough is 30x deposit plus bonus, so R30,000 in bets on slots and other eligible games before withdrawal. Neither night is the “cheaper” one by default. One buys atmosphere, food and company; the other buys more time at the games.

Do I need a loyalty card?

It helps. Suncoast and Montecasino use Tsogo Rewards, and Montecasino’s slots are played with a smart card. Sun City uses Sun MVG; bring your SA ID or passport to sign up.

What’s open late?

Suncoast and Montecasino’s main floor are open around the clock. Sun City’s slots run to 02h00 early in the week and all night at weekends.

Can I play the same games online?

The same game types, yes: slots, blackjack, roulette, baccarat and craps. The titles differ, and the newest online slot, Crimson Castle, launched on 30 September 2026.
