Early life & Amateur Career

Dmitry Bivol was born on December 18 in the year 1990 in Tokmak, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union. His father was born in Moldova and his mom was ethnically Korean and was born in Kazakh SSR. Bivol’s parents shifted to Kyrgyzstan after they graduated and turned into a married couple. Bivol spent his early days in Kyrgyzstan. After he turned 11, he along with his parents moved to Russia.

Bivol was six years of age when he started boxing. Since his childhood days, he weighed a lot more than other average size kids. Bivol used to defeat much older guys whenever he fought them in his amateur bouts. At the junior U-17 level, he lifted the 2 world championship titles.

In addition, he won a bronze medal in the middleweight division at the 2008 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships. For two years in 2012 and 2014, he won the Russian national amateur boxing champions as a light heavyweight. As an amateur boxer, he had an amazing win record of 268 to 15.

He entered the ring as a professional boxer for the first time in November 2014. In his first 6 fights, he defeated the opponent by knockout. On May 21, 2016, he won the interim WBA light-heavyweight title. Dmitry was elevated to WBA’s full champion after the two titles were vacated. He was ranked at the top by the WBA when he was an interim champion. Bivol then entered the ring against the 11-ranked Trent Broadhurst. He won the fight at the end of the first round with a clean right-handed shot.

On March 3, 2018, he faced the toughest opponent of his career, Sullivan Barrera. He was able to stop him in the 12 and final round. The fight between Bivol and Barrera peaked at 570,000 viewers on HBO. In June 2018, Bivol’s next opponent was announced, who was a longtime contender, Isaac Chilemba. The two faced each other in front of a crowd of 5642. Bivol was able to defeat Chilemba in a 12-round through a unanimous decision. The win helped him to retain his WBA title.

Bivol was elevated to the full WBA Super light-heavyweight champion on October 10, 2019. Just two days later on October 12, he fought Gilbert Lenin Castillo at the Wintrust Arena, Chicago. He had a victory over Castillo with a convincing unanimous decision in the sixth round. In February 2022, it was announced that he would defend his WBA title against the 4-division world champion, Canelo Alvarez. The fight took place on May 7, when Bivol defeated Alvarez by unanimous decision with a score of 115 to 113.

Bivol was in full control over Alvarez from the opening bell. He was fully utilizing his size, range, and jab to win the fight and retain his light heavyweight title. In the end, all three judges scored the intense fight 115-113. To avoid a draw, Bivol had to win the final rounds on all 3 cards.

Dmitry Bivol is married to his wife named Ekaterina. It is known that he met Ekaterina in the mid-2000s.  Soon after their first meeting, the two started their relationship. Bivol was 23 and Ekaterina was around 16, when both exchanged their wedding vows. Together they share two kids. Their first son, Miron Bivol was born on November 28, 2014, and their second son, Nikol Bivol was born on February 23, 2017.
